Tina Turner, whose 60-year career was marked by a volcanic voice and powerful dance movements, has away at the age of 83.
Her spokesman Bernard Doherty confirmed the news in a statement that the iconic singer passed away on May 24 after a protracted illness at her home in Zurich in Switzerland.
"Tina Turner, the 'Queen of Rock'n Roll,' passed away today in her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, after a protracted illness. She was 83 years old. The statement mourned the loss of both a musical icon and an inspiration. A small group of family and friends will gather for a private funeral service. Please give her family some space during this trying time.The singer, born in the United States, moved to Switzerland in 1994 with her German actor/music producer husband, and in 2013 she became a naturalized Swiss citizen. She has had several significant health issues in recent years, including a stroke, intestinal cancer, and complete kidney failure requiring a transplant.
Turner has had one of the longest careers in music, with Top 40 hits spanning four decades, many Grammys, a Kennedy Center Honor, and induction into the music and Roll Hall of Fame.Recently, an HBO documentary titled Tina focused on Turner and her life.
In the 1960s, Turner and her then-husband Ike were one of the most electrifying acts thanks to Turner's incendiary singing, glittery stage-wear, and seemingly endless energy as the frontwoman of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, performing high-octane covers of songs like "Proud Mary," "Come Together," and "I Want to Take You Higher."
After deciding to go it alone as a performer in the 1970s, Turner became one of the best-selling female singers of all time thanks to her MTV-era singles including "What's Love Got to Do with It," "The Best," and "Private Dancer."
Turner's early life was hampered by the brutality of her husband, musical collaborator, and father of her children, Ike Turner. In 2007, he passed away. What's Love Got to Do with It, starring Angela Bassett, depicted her ordeal of survival and escape in 1993.On November 26, 1939, in the little village of Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner was born as Anna Mae Bullock. Her mother left the family when she was just 11 years old to escape her violent husband. Turner was a teenager when her father married and left the state with his new wife, leaving her and her sisters in the care of their grandmother.
In the late '50s, when Ike and his band, the Kings of Rhythm, were playing the club circuit in St. Louis, Turner met the man who would become her husband. Turner was only 17, while he was in his early twenties.
According to her memoir My Love Story, published in 2018, "Ike wasn't conventionally handsome." Not only was he not attractive to me, but he wasn't even remotely my type. Ike appeared elderly to me, although being just 25, because I was used to high school lads who were neatly groomed, athletic, and dressed in denim. 'God, he's ugly,' I thought.
Tina joined the band, and her friendship with Ike turned amorous after an affair with saxophonist Raymond Hill culminated in the birth of her first son, Craig, in 1958. He continued to focus on work even after learning that she was carrying his child. Ike saw an opportunity that had nothing to do with love when the band's first studio recording with Tina brought in $25,000. "My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his money-maker," Tina recalled writing. He had to keep me financially and emotionally dependent on him so that I would never leave him.
Ike, despite the wishes of the future celebrity, bestowed upon her the moniker she would become known by around this time. The name "Tina" comes from a TV program character who was a major influence. He made she marry him and adopt his surname, which might be read as a declaration of ownership. He did so much so that he trademarked the name "Tina Turner."
