A swine flu outbreak has been reported from more than a dozen states of the country. More than 160 people have lost their lives so far, while over 4,500 people have tested positive across different states. The virus has affected people from the northen-most state of Jammu and Kashmir to the southern state of Kerala. Rajasthan is the worst affected with 76 deaths reported so far and nearly 2,000 positive case.

Also known as H1N1, the virus was first detected in April 2009 in a 10-year-old girl in California. In June 2009, it was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. India reported its first death due to H1NI infection in August the same year.
Since then, nearly six lakh people have died worldwide from swine flu.
