Take home messages for ‘How to peer review’:

When receiving requests to review
• Feel free to say no and to indicate the reason why. Editors-in-Chief appreciate honest feedback.
• Feel free to suggest an alternative reviewer. A colleague of yours might appreciate the chance to review a manuscript, and Editors-in-Chief are grateful for your suggestion
• Be aware of Conflict of Interests for reviewers

While reviewing
• Feel free to indicate for which parts of the manuscript you don’t have the expertise to review
• Write a summary of the manuscript as introduction to your review. This will help you structuring your review and indicates to the Editors-in-Chief that you have a good grasp of the manuscript
• Write a review you’d like to receive

When submitting a review
• You can submit confidential comments to the Editors-in-Chief if needed
• Be aware of the Transparent Peer Review option. Authors can choose to publish the reviews and rebuttals; reviewers can choose to attach their name to their reviews
