Lewis Hamilton came into Formula 1 in 2007, he was a highly anticipated driver having been signed by McLaren at the age of 13. But, although the expectations were high for Lewis, what he did in his debut season even to this day has to go down as the greatest rookie season in F1 history as he went head to head for the title against Alonso, Massa and Raikkonen.

Little mistake @6:37 I say 'ahead of Alonso' when I meant to say behind :)

To this day, Hamilton's 109 points is still the most points achieved by a driver in their debut season. This being despite the change in points system in 2010.

When you lead the championship in your rookie season and your team mate is the one that beat Schumi...

Honestly the fact that Lewis still holds the record is really impressive. Considering they had less races back then and drivers got only about half the number of points they do now. Shows how well he did to get 109 points

Wow I've always heard that Hamilton's rookie season was the best in F1 history, but I had no idea he lost the Championship by 1 point. That is absolutely insane. I cannot believe how close he was

No rookie has scored more points than Hamilton did, even under the new points system. Pretty impressive

Funny thing is that Hamilton's 2007 season is almost identical to Villeneuve's 1996 season. Both got 4 wins, both got 5 second places and both finished P2 in the standings in their rookie year. Hamilton got one more 3rd place and almost won the championship, but Jacques 96 campaign shouldn't be underestimated. Oh, and both won the title on the second try. Maybe in an alternative universe JV is a 6-time champion... scary.

I actually sometimes think 2007 was his best year.
He made the other guys look like rookies.

This man’s first season was a damn Hollywood blockbuster film. Can’t wait to see it on the big screen one day

Unpopular opinion: he would have deserved that '07 more than the '08 championship

Lewis literally won a championship one year later after his debut. Shows that he’s a really great driver.

I just recently started to get into F1. Usually with other sports, I would instantly gravitate towards the underdogs. But man, Hamilton is just too good to hate.

Do not know why people discredit his driving. Beat prime Fernando Alonso in the same car when he was a rookie. Greatest F1 driver of all time in my opinion.

One thing that isn't mentioned enough is that he is one of the greatest British sportsmen of all time, nevermind just driver.

Hamilton is easily one of the greatest F1 drivers, and his dad is a true hero!

I'm actually glad he didn't win that season. I think it made him a better driver to know anything can happen at any time, and not to take things for granted.
rookie year rookie mistakes its all good.

People can hate on hamilton for only winning the title when he has had the best car. That is the worst excuse out there, majority of drivers who win the world title have the best car. Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Vettel, Rosberg and yes hamilton to name a few, but you also need consistency and the mentality to win, hamilton has that champions mentality and he always has and he will until the day that he retires, and when that day comes, a lot of people are going to realise just how special of a driver he was.

Amazing video. I started following F1 because of Lewis. His driving, speed, consistency just amazed me. I had no idea who he was and one day I just randomly started seeing his pole laps and best moments on facebook, his race wins and overtakes and I was amazed. I had no idea I could fall in love with a sport so much and especially with someone's driving. But it is not just his driving that made me like him so much. It is his humbleness, his respect towards others, his strength and elite mentality when facing hard times but most of all his grace in losing. I think Abu Dhabi 2021 shows this best. He lost a championship under controversial circumstances on a last lap after dominating the whole race. He sat 2min in his car and collected himself, got out and congratulated to both Red Bull and Max. Stood on that podium with head held up high and even gave an interview. The mental strength that took him to act like this is something I have never ever seen. It just shows what kind of person and a champion he really is and what an amazing job his father did raising him. Watching his old races and seeing him now and how far he has grown despite immense pressure and hate throughout the years is really amazing. He is not just a racing driver, he is an amazing person and a role model before everything else.
