When you hear "8k Printer", that doesn't actually mean all that much

Instructions unclear, bought a 3d printer for $8k

I want a 20" 16k for big build space with the same precision. 😆

That why DPI is more useful than resolution

I mean, 8K is good either way! On a smaller screen you get more resolution, on a bigger screen you get the resolution of a small 4K display (guessing), but with a large build plate! :)

8K means nothing..

For reference, a human hair has a diameter of round about 60 micron

I would say that anything unrelated to elephants is irrelephant...
But, i'm with you on this one, DPI, or more correctly PPI is the correct measurement to look for.

Did you just print Opie from Sons Of Anarchy?...🤯

A bit clickbaity and yet absolutely true and a needed info to pass around for beginners looking to delve into 3D printing. Well done, Ross, that's the perfect subject for that format :)

I tried to explain this to someone on Facebook, but it totally went over their head lol .

The bigger screen helps to fit more stuff on the bed while you print though. There are lots of figures and statues that require a larger screen.

An 8k Printer will have more details than a same size one that's only 4k or 6k. 8k just means pixels relative to not just screen size but area also. Also 8k printers can print bigger prints with either same details or better than a smaller version of the same printer.

Misleading title. You also immediately contradict this title seconds later by clarifying it.

The other major consideration is light bleed. Even if you made a 20k screen at a small size, it still wouldn't be able to actually resolve that resolution.

This is where people need to understand that the printers us mere mortals buy are not SLA, they're MSLA. Masked Stereo Lithography. True SLA printers, the ones for industry use that cost many thousands, use lasers instead of a screen. The laser can actually get the light right onto the desired spot with little to know bleed, so they can resolve really high resolutions.

DLP printers are the middle ground here. They use a projector and mirror matrix to focus light allowing for pinpoint accuracy. The main issue holding them back is that Texas Instruments is essentially the sole manufacturer of mirror matrices. This means low production volume and high cost. The most common use of DLP setups right now is actually in movie projects, and this is where all of the higher resolution ones are being sent. This means that the only two enthusiast grade DLP printers are using 2k DLP mirror units. Hopefully we'll get a 4k or 8k unit in the future, as it is just a flat out superior technology to LCD, other than cost wise.

DLP and SLA also tend to be compatible with a wider array of materials than MSLA as they don't need to combat light bleed. Not having to worry about bleed means they can more fully cure any individual pixel, where cranking up the exposure time or intensity on an MSLA printer will increase bleed and result in a blurry image.

How do you even print with goo? I only understand filament.

Having a micron pixel ratio would be a much more cohesive way to advertise these accurately
