The footage of the guy putting frozen sausages in his armpits, and the footage from last year of a Chinese restaurant worker taking grease out of the garbage to go serve to people in their restaurant basically guaranteed that I'd never visit mainland China, ever. Why would I ever want to risk buying or eating stuff like that?

A friend of mine told me that in an IT company he once worked basic everyday office security measures started to be taken more seriously because of what happened one day. They had visitors from another company, visiting them for business purposes. A Chinese company. At some point during a break they were left alone while everybody else was going to lunch or something. After a while someone saw what these Chinese representatives were doing: All of them were at the (then unlocked) work laptops of the company employees, with USB sticks connected, rummaging around.

It's my understanding that they were not there _specifically_ to do corporate espionage. They were merely being opportunistic in an "opportunity makes the thief" manner: They probably saw the opportunity and probably thought that maybe they'll get some bonuses or other perks if they return to their own company with some useful material.

It just speaks volumes about a certain type of mentality.

During heatwaves in Australia, the government does advise children, the elderly and disabled to seek relief from the heat while out and about; that does include resting in shopping centres, libraries and other places with A/C. But this would be taking it too far.

I lived in south China for 10 years. I could never figure out how people survived there during the summer prior to electric air conditioning. The truth is people, especially the elderly, would drop like flies during the hot months.
