I don't think many people realise how sad the history of Ireland has been : Slavery, famine, persecution, oppression, this small island has seen it all, but if any visitor goes to Ireland, the scenery is stunning, the people weloming, the music wonderful, and the " craic " in the pubs will leave such a lasting impression .

Us Irish people have always had it hard and it’s shoved in our faces when we bring it up because no one else learns about our history! If a slave owner knew they only had someone for a few years, they would work that person much harder than someone they had for life. "Indentured servants" were often intentionally worked to death.

I was born and raised in Ireland. I've tried to have a similar conversation with African Americans in the past. It never goes well.

My discussing the suffering of Irish people does not demean or dismiss the suffering of African slaves. Yet that is how African Americans construe it.

Sorry, nobody has a monopoly on suffering and I am nobody's victim.

Saddest of all is there are actually college grads walking around who think that slavery is a uniquely American thing that started in America.

This knowledge was just part of our normal high-school curriculum in the 1960’s. Some people signed up for 5 to 7 years to pay off a debt, and some were simply enslaved for life.

My first European ancestor to N America was an indentured servant at the founding of Jamestown. He survived the starving time, his master did not, so he was freed.
