London and Broadway's original Jean Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, performed the role of the Bishop for a special performance of LES MISÉRABLES Saturday evening, January 11 in Toronto at the Princess of Wales Theatre alongside Broadway's next Valjean, Ramin Karimloo, who will star in Cameron Mackintosh's new production of the legendary musical beginning March 1 at the Imperial Theatre. Wilkinson passed the torch -- and the silver candlesticks - to Karimloo in a special benefit performance for five different Toronto charities: Casey House, Covenant House, Ernestine's, The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa and Theatre 20. Wilkinson and Karimloo brought down the house with a special curtain call duet of "Bring Him Home."

Loved it when Ramin just stepped back into the line to let Colm sing the final note. Pure class.

I definitely feel Valjean is forever Colms role. And Ramin killed as Phantom, not even Colm can take that away from him. Both incredible performers this is such a beautiful rare piece.

the audience has no idea how historically remarkable this is.

This brought me to tears. Ramin is pure class bowing out to let Colm have the spotlight. He also gave special acknowledgment and a bow of thanks to Michael Crawford at the Phantom 25th concert. Someday someone will be bowing to him.

I read somewhere that Colm Wilkinson was Ramin's inspiration; like Ramin watched the Phantom of the Opera when he was 12 starring Colm, and decided that he wanted to go into musical theater and play the Phantom someday... and so this is just beautiful.

what respect Ramin must have for the master, Colm Wilkinson,  when he allows him to do the last note. Ramin will be a future master

Colm's speaking voice is adorable

Jesus, his voice doesn't age. It's exactly as great as in the 80s. Same tone, power, range, everything.

A die-hard Colm Wilkinson fan, I was lucky enough to see this performance.  No matter who else plays the role, he will always be Jean Valjean to me.  Do have to say, this duet was a real tear jerker!!!

Ramin sings SO beautifully and he is so resonant.
Colm is so stunning when he sings. Can you believe he's almost 70? He sings better than most, even when they're 40 years younger than him!!!
I've literally watched this 10 times in a row. I still don't even know the words because I can't stop focusing on their astonishing voices.

It is so magical when Ramin steps back in respect to the master. Colm allowed Ramin’s “song to take flight” by inspiring him into theatre and Ramin returns the favour. Just beautiful. What I would give to see either of these two live, in anything!

Credit to the lady in the cast who waited for Colm to finish his note before breaking into applause. Love these two, love the fact that seeing Colm in Phantom inspired Ramin to go into musical theatre despite no formal training!! Colm will always be Valjean to me but Ramin definitely holds the Phantom's flame (and also makes the most incredible Enjolras). Bravo

I managed to hold back the tears until Ramin kindly stood back and let Colm hit the last note then I just bawled.

“If god had granted me a son”

Ramin is like Colm’s child in the role, as he’s almost passing down the mantle. Love them both.
