Cold Steel Trail Hawk Mods Update

This is an update on the modifications I did to my Cold Steel Trail Hawk.

I removed the thick gunky paint that Cold Steel slathers on these things and gave the head a light polishing. I also sanded down the shaft on this Cold Steel Trail Hawk and applied a light natural stain and 2 coats of linseed oil. The shaft was then given a basic wrap of para-cord for some extra grip.

All in all the Cold Steel Trail Hawk is a fun tomahawk that has a lot of upside. It won't compete with custom offerings but it can be the basis for a neat project. I would buy another Cold Steel Trail Hawk in a heartbeat.

Really nice mods. The wood burned handle reminds me of bamboo. This seems like an inexpensive project with some interesting possibilities.

It was a fun project. Thanks for checking it out.

you should not have removed the flair from the top of handle, it's a safety feature of the hawk and stops the head from flying off (especially when you remove the set screw, which you should do anyway) I agree with paracord wrapping the handle, but that does slow down removing the head when you need to.

Thanks, I like what you did to it, I bought one and thinking to do something similar, dont like when some guys carve into the handle, I think that weakens the handle.good job, keep posting videos.

One of the features of a hawk is you can slide the handle off to make it more compact.

i modded mine too..had a hard time staining the wood dark enough because of the wood hardness. Ended up using a wood dye (aniline)...not a stain, to achieve the effect...worked great

Say Heah Bro, Yeah, You did a great job on that C.S. Hawk, But I'm not as talented doing things like that, So I have to pay for others labors. Yeah, I always wanted a Hawk, so believe me I researched them. both here on the Tube and at Forums, then I even talked to the makers of the Hawks. But I wasn't a pain, infact we all enjoyed our conversations. .I finally decided to go with 2Hawks, I was looking for a Hawk, but ended up getting the Trapper Double Bit Hatchet for my first product, It's very similar in specs with Nessmuks Double Bit Hatchet, But Devin Price makes them look like pieces of art. They are beautiful, and when I first opened the box, I thought I ordered a miniture, Man this thing was small, I mean real small, It's defenetly a lightweight that punches like a heavyweight, when I first took it in the bush, It didn't take long for me to carry it instead of a large knife, don't get me wrong, I like large knives, but the Double Bit Hatchet is a pleasure to on person carry, and like I said it punches like a heavyweight, No regrets. I finally got my WarBeast Tomahawk, It has three sharp edges allowing it to bite deep and throw big chunks, but it also pulls out easier, Yeah and it too is great to on person carry, I use it alot when more wood processing is needed. On long trips where we process alot of wood just to stay warm, I really like my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, but on the move and yet more wood is needed to stay warm, The 2Hawks Warbeast is my go to chopper, I also had a guy hang a heavy thin 5 " face Iltis Oxhead on a 19" White Hickory Handle, and this House Axe is just right in camp to process wood from kindling to felling small dead trees for firewood, I love Axe Tapping with it, so do the other guys, so wood processing is never hard to get a volunteer to process camp wood. The shear weight of the head makes short work processing kindling, getting a leather harness allows it to be carried easier. So Yeah, The Tomahawk and the Double Bit Hatchet are on person carry, the House Axe is a phenomenal camp axe and ofcouce, what can I say about a Gransfors, Oh, I also have 3 different Estwing's that see alot of use, Yeah, their thin heads but they can split too, and for my B'Day I bought myself a very nice Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor Range Hatchet, I didn't really need another hatchet, but I got a great price so I bought it, Thanx for sharing your Tomahawk, Boy I wish I could do that, I thought about it and it seems easier for me just to buy one, like that House Axe, the guy really did a nice job on the handle, I prolly will put some Wilson Tennis Racket Tap on it, but then I could just leave it alone, it too look's purdy, , , Thanx for sharing, , ,

Doing this sort of paracord wrap "knot", will that hold with tight with out coming loose when used heavily for chopping wood?

What cuts did you make to the handle? I ordered a couple of different hawks from cold steel. And I have a little time on my hands before school start. I figured it would be a nice project. I was thinking about cutting the handle like hammer and axe handles. What do you think?

Thanks for the video! I've been looking into getting one of these. Where did you buy yours for so cheap at? Also sorry about your bag. Bummer

But with the cord wrapping you can't take the head off to use it in other ways than just as a hawk.
