Part 2: Principles of Reliable Data Transfer
CNT-4731: Net-Centric Computing
This module will introduce students to the basic concepts, mechanisms, and protocols of the transport layer. In particular, the students will learn the roles of the transport layer protocols, and how the transport layer can realize a reliable data delivery over unreliable channels. We will go into details of the UDP and TCP protocols, analyze their headers, and packets exchanges (e.g., messages and critical header fields to set up a connection, transfer data, recover from errors, and tear down the connection). In addition, we will go over principles and developed TCP congestion control mechanism. The material in this chapter is essential for completion of the project 2 and, in general, gives understanding how today’s internet operates without requiring 100% reliability of the communication channels and without overwhelming the whole system.
