1978 here - we learned not to talk s*** because we couldn't hide behind screens. If you said it then you said it with your whole chest and took the consequences

I was born in 1968. It was the greatest time to be a kid. We did all sorts of stupid crap Actually I'm surprised we survived it.❤

We were kids. We didn't have to "schedule a play date." We told our parents, "Ma, I'm going to Brian's", we found our friends and we had fun. The only kids that wore helmets rode the short bus to school. Falling and getting a tooth knocked out was a kind of badge of honor.

Gen X (1967 model) and proud to be part of the last generation of self thinkers and problem solvers. Mom would put me outside as soon as the sun was up and I stayed outside until the sun went down or I had no choice but to go inside. When I was outside me and my buddy went on great fun adventures and it was up to us to figure out what to do and how to fix things that needed fixing. I work with guys who are in their twenties and if something out of the ordinary happens they shutdown and go into a panic because they don’t have any problem solving skills. It’s automatically “who do we call to fix it” from them. A month ago I had one come to me in a panic because the overhead lights on the forklift had quit. He wanted me to call the forklift service to come out to fix it, I said no. Then went over and check the fuse box and found the problem, burnt fuse that needed replacing.

Anyone else sat around the front steps with friends and asked what are we gonna do today?😊

We were the generation that everyone said was supposed to bring this country down, instead we are the generation that has kept this great country afloat the last 40 years.

1970 GenXer here. I don’t think my situational awareness would be the same without my childhood experiences. From avoiding some of the older kids who were bullies or bad news, to the older ones who helped mentor in different ways, to recognize bad situations and trust your gut when something bad was going to happen, pushing the limits and at times exceeding them and getting hurt, etc.

So true, born in 1973.I got my first job at 11yrs old (I sold Avon door2door sales in small town) learnt to drive at 10yrs old (farm life) and was pretty financially independent by the time I was 15yrs old on my 2nd job (big supermarket), all while going to school, when I started traveling on holidays paid by my earnings. Supported myself thru University and graduated with 3 yr degree at 20yrs old, my parents not educated so we’re not helpful. Young people today can’t even get out of bed and leave their home and I can’t understand why when there’s a whole world out there to explore and experience, it’s the wonderful point of life. My life motto is Never Give Up, keep going.

As an example. My friends and I with flashlights and candles, mapped out the entire flood pipes over the summer. We also built tree forts from scraps of wood and spent the night in the creek. As he stated our parents wanted nothing to do with us. "Go outside and play"... Come inside and ask "May I spend the night at..." and before you could tell them who's house my parents would say "YES!".. off to the creek we went. We shot BB guns at toads in the creek. Try that now and SWAT shows up pointing guns at you because some Karen called the police and reported "Kids with guns". We are different and we are better. You are soft and fragile. We grew up with "Yo momma and Dead Baby Jokes"...We are not the same. I am raising my boys to be GenX 2.0.

Gen X here. Growing up on a farm was a little different than the "street light" analogy but not much. I spent hours roaming the farm and climbing on rooftops of sheds, playing up in the hayloft and barn, and just snooping everywhere I probably shouldn't have been. My parents were too busy to worry. Always showed up for "dinner and supper" though. Of course, all good things come to an end. When I got old enough to help in the house and on the farm, my free time was much more restricted. It was a great childhood though. Loved being a teen in the '80s. ❤ Thanks for the great video.

We worked things out amongst ourselves. If we got into a fight or a bully picked on us we handled it without mommy and daddy or social media or counseling. We didn’t expect anything and absolutely nothing was handed to us.

I am 60 years old and I can testify this man told the whole truth and nothing but the truth! There were no safety nets back then! And like he said, you either swim or drown, it was that simple!!!

We also learned conflict resolution, creativity, how to make do, and most importantly personal responsibility.

Words of wisdom. The one thing all these videos miss is we worked too. I mowed lawns, picked cans, and painted fences. It was hard for my mother too take away the inflatable boat I bought with my own cash for fishing. Even when on the west coast of Canada she caught me checking out orcas in it. I told her I wasn’t stupid enough to try and catch it 😉. I feel sorry for my kids. But when I could I showed them a taste. Like rolling boulders down a hill. But now their faces are stuck to a screen.
