I’m a cosmetics chemist. The pH of any given product can drift over a shelf life. When formulating skin/hair products, every ingredient added needs to fit into that drift, which is +/-10% and that could be why the Redken product has a higher pH range. This is particularly important for preservatives and actives which have to fit into that drift range.

The pH of the scalp is naturally around 5.5. In order for the shampoo to remove sebum, the pH must be the same or higher (max 6 for dailyuse). Hair likes a lower pH of 4 - 2.5! Therefore, it is important that the shampoo has a pH around 5-6 and then we apply the conditioner with a lower pH along the length. If the shampoo has a pH of, for example pH 3-4, it will not wash the skin and will cause irritation.

I don't know if I explained clearly in English 🙈 Greetings from Poland ♥ ️

First wash with my amika the cure set bought on your recommendation and seriously WOW. I have used EVERYTHING - olaplex, Redken, Kerastase, pureology, Davines, Moroccan oil and I find them all “nice but not amazing” but this seriously made my hair feel like silk. Can’t believe it. Love the smell too and the conditioner is like a luxury thick yogurt. I realise it’s crazy to talk like this about haircare Lol but that’s why we all love these hair videos!

I love the purology shampoo and conditioner. I started watching your channel in February of this year after I chopped off about 8 inches off my hair. I spent about $300 buying products you recommend and you have saved my hair sooo much. I’m always looking forward to new recommendations from you. My hair has grown about 4 inches since February all thanks to you! My hairstylist was so amazed at my growth. Thank you sooo much for these videos

That olaplex shampoo has to be the most concentrated shampoo I have ever used! I have never had a shampoo lather the way it does with such a small amount and it’s still very gentle. Olaplex shampoo and conditioner is definitely one of the best I’ve ever used.

My daughter has extremely light blonde hair and since birth it’s been unmanageable (not exaggerating, it literally turns into dread locks over night lol) I’ve tried everything with her hair. Silicone free, coconut oil, high protein no protein etc and the Annika products along with the olaplex leave in have finally made her hair soooo healthy and beautiful! It’s finally been able to grow and her hair has the most wonderful shine and texture.

I had the worst protein build-up and flaky scalp while using Olaplex! my hair was also frizzier than ever. After trying many others I purchased the whole product line of the Redken acidic bonding thanks to you and it changed my life forever!! I have fine-medium straight hair with balayage.

I’m a cosmetologist. pH balanced = 7.5. So if the shampoo is pH = 6. And the conditioner pH = 4, neither are pH balanced. But, the lower the pH, the smoother you hair will feel, as a lower pH = more acidic and closes the hair’s cuticle so it feels smoother.

I just purchased and began using Amika The Kure based on your rec. I am thoroughly impressed. I have used Biolage conditioning balm my whole life. It’s the only conditioner that helps me get through the knots in my thick, wavy hair. I used the Amika shampoo and conditioner thinking that the conditioner wouldn’t be enough for me. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised! Holy hell! Thank you for putting in all of the work and reviewing products for us! I am beyond thrilled with how my hair reacted to Amika! 👌💜✨🖤🙏

I have never had a shampoo review be so accurate and helpful. I hust switched from Redken Acidic Bonding to Olaplex 4&5... and instantly noticed I was getting a more itchy scalp... it is due to the protein build up as you discussed! You have made me realise I need to value pH more for my particular hair... so thank you so much!!!

PS I am a trained Chemist (MSc and Masters in biotechnology) and I actually worked on hair care additives which were bought by some Japanese shampoo companies... I know teach Chemistry up to A-Level (what you would have as AP Chemistry!)... So I can safely say I am really impressed with a non chemist to be able to communicate all this information to such a high level! ❤️

Edit: 10/18/21 - 4 week update. The hair fall has improved significantly and it feels healthy. Will continue to use and update.

Original post:
I have used the pureology strength a few times and I have a lot more hair fall than normal. Not breakage, but actually hair coming out. Why is that? It makes my hair soft and moisturized feeling, but I cannot continue to use with this much loss.

Shampoos contain alkaline ingredients which act as the cleansers and raise the pH. They raise the cuticle and allows the cleaners to lift dirt from within. This is why your hair can feel rough and tangled before you put conditioner on. Shampoos can have PH levels as high as 10.

Conditioners are more acidic (lower pH) and this closes the cuticle, locking in moisture & smoothing the hair.

I can't tell you how helpful this was to me, I watched id probably 4-5×. I ended up with pureology and amika conditioner! Can't wait till they get here! Thanks for all your help! I'm a bleach blonde myself, our hair looks almost exactly the same so your words mean so much to me!! Thank you a thousand times!!

Shampoos tend to have a higher ph to open up the hair and really cleanse it well and then you go in with a more acidic conditioner and seal everything in. Most of the time you will not find a super acidic shampoo. But if you want to check one out the fanola fiber fix shampoo is very acidic I think it’s a 3-4 ph that’s the most acidic set I’ve ever found

Not a chemist, but a nursing major who just took chemistry and is taking physiology 😬 pH can vary by batch based on how acidic or basic it happens to turn out. This can vary based on ingredient sourcing, the amounts *slightly* changing in each batch, etc. The citric acid, obviously, is acidic, and I’m assuming that they most likely use a set amount of each ingredient and don’t adjust for each batch, meaning that although the ingredients are in the same amounts each time, the pH can vary because the amounts don’t account for small variations that naturally occur in each batch. pH can also change over time when it’s exposed to air and water.

TL;DR: citric acid is the main ingredient used to make the pH acidic, and because each batch can vary in pH before the citric acid is added, and the amounts of each ingredient in the “recipe” never changes, the pH may not always be exactly the same. But that’s just my kind of educated guess
