How To Teach Your Dog LEAVE IT - THE BEST WAY - Dog Training Video

Leave It is one of the most important things you will teach your dog or puppy. It is not only a matter of obedience, but it can be life or death. The BEST way to teach LEAVE IT is to do it when the dog is young, but no matter what - all dogs should know LEAVE IT.

This can be a fun game, but the training results MUST WORK.

If you tell your dog LEAVE IT, he or she must listen. In order to get your puppy, or even adult dog, to understand this clearly, you will need to be able to structure and enforce the lesson.

Some people will teach leave it, as YUCK or phooey, but the dog must clearly understand how to LEAVE it immediately when you command him.

I think this is one of the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT things to teach EVERY dog. In this video I break it down simply and effectively with Duane our 5 month old Yellow Labrador Retriever.

I'm a recent subscriber and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the way you "show" the training, rather than showing the "trained" dog. This is so much more helpful!!.

"Dogs can understand what you want them to do, but they can't understand what you don't want them to do." Great advice! Thanks for the videos!

I tend to listen to training videos at 1.25 or 1.5 speed because people prattle on endlessly. I appreciate how concise you are, I don’t have to change a thing.

I follow quite a few dog trainers and I really like you - your videos have only the useful stuff. No water, no bs

We just got a 9 week old German Shephard puppy and i have tried all the "flowery" leave it commands and just as you said ... he is now going for our HANDS, not in a play or nice way either. NO ONE shows the struggles of a fresh command, no one shows any correction other than "patience". by that i mean WAIT for your dog to stop and listen... and let me tell you a high energy 9 week old BIG german shephard does not wait and stop. (He is almost 20 pounds at 9 weeks.) I'm a small female, it's getting to the point where i have actual wounds on my hands for the "cover it and wait" technique. I am definitely going to try this method. He has now started to play the "grab it and run" game. It's hard. He is a big puppy and nothing else is working.

My 'takeaway' from teaching a new command is to make it as easy as possible at first and then raise the difficulty once the command is known. I use 'leave' ... one word. A neutral object to start (spoon, crumpled bag, etc.) and move to a shoe or even a cookie later... once the command is well known and the dog clearly does the action (ignore the object) on command. To toss a biscuit on the ground for most folks is to set the dog up to fail and very few owners will correct the dog enough to teach the command.

I’m going to try this and then I’ll use this technique to teach my pup to leave the chickens alone after. Wish me luck. 😊

Great video.. loved the fact that it did not go perfectly and that Dwayne was rambunctious. My Boston is like that So it helped to see the corrections

Thanks for all the great videos. The leave command is something I think I taught my 6 month old German Shepherd by mistake. When we got him on 6 weeks, he used to charge for the cat's bowl when I let him in the kitchen, and chow down everything in the bowl. I used to just tell him "no, leave" (in my home language of course) and placed the bowl up on the counter. After a few weeks, he started to ignore the bowl by himself. Even telling him to leave other stuff, he obeys. I think I have the leave command down to 70%. Will definitively get the command to 100% with some more practice from this video. Thanks again.

I need more Duane! The puppy training videos you put up are a huge help in tightening up my technique for little mistakes here and there! I haven’t trained a puppy in a couple years so I’m definitely benefiting from watching Duane, what a cutie 😍

Lol, the feeding of cheese from your mouth to dog reminds me of how I gave a treat to my godchildren when they were pups; good stuff and great easy to understand training.

Perfect video for me. My young lab is like a vacuum cleaner when we go walking. I'm constantly correcting and telling him leave it but need to implement more positive reinforcement as shown here. My dog looks just like the one in the video except a few weeks older.

You deserve more views. Your way makes way more sense than the more popular dog trailers on Youtube

I never even thought about the negative action of hand-blocking, but now that i know it feels like a no-brainer!

Great method for teaching leave it. I agree that want is most important is the dog does not get what you initially told him to "leave it." One of the first behaviors that a dog should learn.
