Here I review the Fosmon VGA Converter versus the StarTech VGA converter. Both receive VGA from a PC and output composite video or s-video. Here I test the s-video outputs to my Sony Trinitron CRT.

Games featured:

Ultima Underworld
System Shock 2
Planet X3
Deadlock II: Shrine Wars

I ran into another choice if anyone is interested. I’ve been using the AITech MaxView (Blue&White translucent color) for about a year now on a WIN98 build with a Voodoo3, on everything including DVD movies to DOS very successfully. Plug and play, no drivers needed. So far, I’m loving it and bought an extra just in case.

They’re usually sold without an adapter but since they’re 5V they can plug into an available USB port. I used a StarTech USB2TYPEM (USB to 5.5mm X 2.1mm). It also needs a Reverse Polarity Converter (small, cheap, find-able barrel adapter). I used a Mr.Power one.

I have a fosmon adapter, and it does have brightness controls in the menu, and adjusting those might help.

I’ve ordered the fosmon and then cancelled after seen this video. Now I ordered the startech from eBay. Thanks. How about the input lag? I like to play Pc emulator games on my crt. Did you found any noticeable input lag?

Hate to disagree... I usually buy and love Startech, but this is garbage.

Bought the Startech first, just because my good history with them. My immediate disappointment was it cut off the far left and bottom of the screen, just a few pixels... meaning the icons on the desktop were difficult to read and the bottom bar was reduced and difficult to make out in detail. No amount of tweaking helped either (what few options there are with this device). I was willing to put up with this, but it finally went to an all green display after a week...total fail.

The Fosman works great for me. Controls allowed me to dial in the perfect size and position. No noticeable gamma or brightness issues. The control options made all the difference.

one big question: is the fosmon able to display lower or "unusual" resolution like you find in many old games (320x240, 320x200, 640x400) or the BIOS of old mainboards.

i am asking because i bought a VGA to HDMI converter and it only works with 640x480 and higher - that means everything is OK as soon as windows has loaded and sets the graphics card to 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and so on ... but it does NOT dislpay the POST screen or DOS because that is both using 720x348 or something ...

i was expecting to see interlaced flickering but i only saw straight scanlines. Do both converters can output 240p or it has something to do with your recording method?

I bought Fujitsu Esprimo C710 also slim computer with one pci-e for about 50$ and old HD3450 low profile with s-video output for 10$ and fortunately don't need any expensive converter. I have i3 procesor but I can upgrade to I5 or I7. It have no sense to buy this expensive StarTech converter if complete computer with hdd ram and procesor and graphic card is cheaper. And this way you can see bios screen and any lo-res like 320x240
