Not to mention it was also the common standard of ancient times to write in the third person, the gospel authors didn’t sign the gospels with their names because they forgot but because it was the common tradition of that time to do so.

Clement of Alexandria’s testimony is most likely independent of the Irenaeus/Papias attestation for 3 reasons:
1. CoA is basically contemporaneous with Irenaeus’s “Against Heresies.”
2. CoA’s testimony differs slightly on *order* of the Gospels but corroborates authorship. A classic signifier of independence.
3. CoA indicates Pantaenus as his source, bringing the link a generation closer and distinct from Irenaeus/Papias.

Justin Martyr (100-160 AD) named it as “memoirs of the apostles”, then proceeds to quote from Matthew, Mark & Luke.

I have an entire list of references, but Clement of Rome, Papias, Polycarp & Ignatius (all of them are contemporaries of the disciples) quoted from the 4 gospels.

If the Gospels really were originally circled anonymously, and there were four of them, what did they call them to distinguish them from each other? "Anonymous Gospel #1" And what evidence do we have that they were called anything other than what we call them today? I genuinely don't know why there is such opposition to the Gospels' traditional attestation; it just seems like the simplest and most straightforward explanation, even if you don't believe them.
