The guitar player is Martin Barre. I just saw The Martin Barre Band this past October 18th. He is one of rock's great legendary guitarist who rarely gets mentioned....which is a shame. He's also a very accomplished flute player which is how he and Ian Anderson were aware of each other before he joined Jethro Tull during the 1968 Christmas Holiday season. Ian learned a lot about your playing the flute from Martin but In definitely gave it his own unique style.

One of the best bands to see Live. Saw them many times from Festivals in the late 60's & into the 70's then concert halls & Ian & friends at small venues a few years ago. Every time was memorable.

A truly unique band are Jethro Tull, Empress and Ian Anderson, such a show man, with or without his trademark flute. Enjoyed your reaction!

There's no flute in Aqualung. But, it's one of their most famous songs. It's about the way we view the homeless (sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls). But when we take another look, he's just an old man down on his luck, going up the road to the Salvation Army for a cup of tea. Then he ends back on our biased view of the homeless (sitting on a park bench) Edit ... You need to see more flute ... Thick As A Brick at Madison Square Garden. The guitarist is Martin Barre ... drummer is Barrie Barlow

your excitement is contageous! He sings about a homeless man. One part (the rock part) explains how people talk down on poor, homeless people. The acoustc side expresses empathy for them (the homeless, symbolised by the homeless man with a lung disease, who is named Aqualung)

This song is about the dichotomy of ways that the homeless are viewed by society generally compared to reality and is reflected in the different singing styles.

Aqualung was my very first Album back when I was about 14 years old, I'm 65 years old now, and I have a collection from their very first Album up to the Album titled "Songs from the Wood".

I've seen a lot of concerts in my life. I've seen Jethro Tull 27 times. Their performances are absolutely next level. Ian Anderson is Rock's best Frontman. All their songs are gems. Next Tull song you should check out is "Thick As A Brick" Live at Madison Square Garden, NYC {1978} or the (live in London 1977) is good too. Aqualung explanation below the band line up:

Tull had many band members over the years. Ian Anderson always surrounded himself with incredible talent, but their most talented official band line up was from '75 to '79 with:
- Ian Anderson (1967-present) - lead vocals, flute, guitar, mandolin, keyboards, saxophone, bagpipe, violin, balalaika, clarinet, various whistles, horns, etc.
- Martin Barre (1968-2011) - guitar, mandolin - Major guitar influence on Mark Knophler
- John Evan (1970-1980) - keyboards
- Barriemore Barlow (1971-1980) - drums - Admired by John Bonham, Neil Peart, Geddy Lee among others. (Geddy Lee stated if he could build his supergroup, Barlow would be his drummer).
- John Glascock (1975-1979) - bass - Richie Blackmore said Glascock was the best bassist in the business.
- Dee Palmer (David at that time) (1976-1980) - keyboards, saxophone, clarinet, orchestral arrangements

The song Aqualung is a critique on humanity and two opposing views on the homeless. One side looks down on the homeless with disgust, while the other side is about compassion and the desire to help.
Jethro Tull isn't about hits. They are about hidden gem after hidden gem after hidden gem. Tull has an intellectually vast and deep music catalogue. They should be seriously explored - both studio and live performances.

One of the best bands to come out of late 60's though the 70's and beyond. Have seen them 4 times.

Martin Barre is electric guitarist - he is superb but severely underrated; he was a mainstay in the band and really helped make them who they are.
There is a good story behind the solo (for the studio version); he had to turn his back on Jimmy Page who popped into the studio during recording, because if he didn't nail it there was a good chance it would turn into a Flute solo - luckily he nailed it.

Came for the song, stayed for the gorgeous lips. They're mesmerizing. Can't stop looking.

As others have said the first part is what a lot of society thinks of homeless people
Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snot's running down his nose
Greasy fingers, smearing shabby clothes
Hey, Aqualung
Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run
Hey, Aqualung
Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Oh, Aqualung.
The more melodic part is a more sympathetic view of the man.
Sun streaking cold
An old man wandering lonely
Taking time the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad
As he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet
Feeling alone
The army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung, my friend
Don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod
You see, it's only me
Do you still remember
December's foggy freeze
When the ice that clings on to your beard
Was screaming agony?
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
With deep-sea diver sounds
And the flowers bloom like madness in the spring
