The Heartbreaking Reason My Dad Never Ate First.
My dad never ate when Mom and I did. He'd sit at the table with us, but he always had “stomach trouble” that seemed to clear up just as we finished our meals. Then, if there was food left, he'd say, "Well, I guess I should try to eat something."
If there wasn't anything left, he'd say his stomach couldn't handle food that night. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized what was really happening. My dad was making sure that my mom and I had enough to eat before feeding himself. He went to bed hungry more times than I ever knew.
I later found out from his family that he had been doing this since he was around 10. He would go hungry as a kid to make sure his mom, younger sister, and younger brother had enough to eat. Now, even the simplest meal at his house looks like a Thanksgiving feast for an army. But to this day, he still fills his plate last and never takes seconds until everyone else is done.
