According to the UN, nearly one in three people worldwide live in a country facing a water crisis, and less than five percent of the world lives in a country that has more water today than it did 20 years ago. Lana Mazahreh grew up in Jordan, a state that has experienced absolute water scarcity since 1973, where she learned how to conserve water as soon as she was old enough to learn how to write her name. In this practical talk, she shares three lessons from water-poor countries on how to save water and address what's fast becoming a global crisis.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more.

Earth is a closed system. Water is recyclable. There's no water scarcity problem. It's how humans manage it.

Lots of talk about conserving water, but only one brief and narrow example of recycling water. The former is good, but you need to do some work on the latter. Gray water systems can replace residential sprinkler systems. There are a lot of low-tech approaches that you can do at home as well.

For example, I flush my toilets with used shower/bath water. Plug the drain and collect the water in (appropriately enough) cat litter bottles. We have high efficiency toilets, so each bottle is good for about a flush and a half. Each shower is good for at least 3 or 4 flushes. The supply line is turned off, and I keep the tank open to refill. (Yes, you can pour the water into the bowl, but this way there's no splash.) Do the math: 1.5 gallons per flush (average), at least 2 flushes per day (low estimate), 365 days per year (rounding down, duh) = about 1100 gallons per year saved.

Our laundry is done with Ecos (plant-based detergent). All the water is filtered of lint, then goes out to rain barrels which water the lawn. We have an average washing machine. It's not high efficiency, but not a dinosaur either. Uses 26 gallons per load (12 gallons to wash, 12 gallons to rinse, plus 2 more gallons during the spin cycle to push the last of the detergent out). Picture a 55 gallon drum. I can fill two of them almost to the top by the time we've done the white, lights, darks, and pink/purple/reds (because I have a daughter). But it all goes to the lawn and becomes local ground water instead of a waste water treatment plant and into the river and out to sea.

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by Sa’d while he was performing ablution. The Prophet said, “What is this extravagance?” Sa’d said, “Is there extravagance with water in ablution?” The Prophet said, “Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river.”

I have a habit of conserving water that said no matter how much you conserve you will always be asked to conserve. Reason is cities will approve more building and welcome more residence for taxes and profits .My city has approved housing approved home building to increase population by 30% 25, 000 more residence during drought time .

Which solution proposed in the TED talks By Lana Mazareh and Deepika Kupur do you think would be most helpful for the city of Cape Town?
(Solution Choice - 1 point, explanation/ example/ evidence - 3 points)
According to Deepika Kupur's ted talk, she mention SODIS which is used for purify to water but it works slow. But there is a new method called photocatalysis which is speeding this SODIS process.

Which solution(s) proposed in the TED talks by Lana Mazareh and Deepika Kurup do you think would be most helpful for addressing issues related to sustainability (air pollution, energy consumption, waste management, deforestation, water problems etc.) in your home country? Write a short paragraph describing the issue/s relevant to your home country and the solution/s from the materials that might or might not work. (Issues: 2 points; Solutions and Explanations: 4 points)
Water problems can happen in everywhere. lam from Turkey and sometimes it happens in my country too. Our country is half island, we have experienced water crises. Sometimes they cut our water beause we did not have enough water and our government had similar solution with Singapore. They built large barrages to keep rain water and it effect our water accesibility, our water limit and social life. People jogging, riding bike and camping around barrages.

Everyone is saying the same thing - give up meat and dairy and you'll be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. A meat based diet uses at least 20 times more water than a plant based diet. Most people know this but are too stubborn, selfish and egotistical to change. People hate feeling they're being dictated too, even tho they're not. It's simply common sense. People say they want a future for their children but fail to put their money where there mouth is. It's very simple. Go vegan, live at least 10 years longer and you'll be in less trouble with the Gods when you die too. Do it!
