If running around the fields of thinly defended rural countryside like a headless chicken counts as 'capturing territory', last weekend my neighbors kid did fully capture my backyard before his mother forced him to 'retreat'. On a more serious note, as long as Ukraine controls the territory they have 'captured' they should have full control over it including defensive positions and complete control of access. So far what I've seen is fast light recon units of Ukraine backed by heavy fire support doing hit and run attacks with no real plan or direction. It's true they are inside Russia carrying out attacks but hard to attribute that as capturing territory when they haven't stationed any forces to defend those territories.

How is that possible?
That's more troops than Ukraine even sent into Russia. Russia doesn't even have enough soldiers in that region to cause those kinds of casualties, the border was barely defended.
