Superior Orbital Fissure - Cranial Foramina   
  
✅ Overview⁣  
 
The superior orbital fissure is contained between the medial border of the greater wing of the sphenoid and the caudal surface of the lesser wing - it also lies between the optic foramen and the foramen rotundum. It is much larger at its medial part and provides a passage for numerous structures.

Plus points... It’s actually also the communication between the cavernous sinus and the apex of the orbit. You’ll find it straddled by the tendinous ring which is the common origin of the four rectus muscles (extraocular muscles).

✅ Mnemonic for its contents

This mnemonic  is cool because it describes the content, lists it in order from superior to inferior, and reminds you of the ophthalmic vein!  Contents passing through the superior orbital fissure form superior to inferior:

“Long Fissures Seem To Store Only Nerves, Instead Of Arteries, Including Ophthalmic Veins”

*L: Lacrimal Nerve - branch of CN V1
*F: Frontal Nerve also branch of CN V1
*S: Superior ophthalmic vein a tributary of the cavernous sinus
*T: Trochlear nerve CN 4
*SO: Superior division of the Oculomotor nerve CN 3
*N: Nasociliary nerve a branch of CN V1
*IO: Inferior division of the Oculomotor nerve CN 3
*A: Abducens nerve CN 6
*IOV: Inferior Ophthalmic vein which is a tributary to both the cavernous sinus & the pterygoid venous plexus
