The United Nations Human Rights Office has released a report detailing the severe consequences of the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza since October 7, 2023. The report underscores serious violations of international law, especially the disproportionate toll on civilians. It reveals that approximately 70% of fatalities in Gaza have been women and children, signaling a systemic breach of humanitarian law principles, such as distinction and proportionality.
Children, particularly those aged 0 to 14, are the most affected group, with around 80% of deaths occurring in residential areas. Among the fatalities, 44% were children, and 26% were women, highlighting the significant impact on non-combatants.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed deep concern over the situation, particularly over reports of attacks on hospitals and journalists, and the use of white phosphorus munitions. Turk urged international action to prevent further atrocities, calling on states to support accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, and to investigate violations of international law within their jurisdictions.
