Initial testing of my Magnetic Linear Accelerator project.
Using Maxwell 2.7V 350F Capacitors as the energy source.
Initial tests suggest speeds in-between 8 & 12 m/s from the 5.4volts provided.
If the electromagnet isn't disengaged at exactly the moment when the projectile is at the center of the coil, it begins to slow down and reverse the direction of the projectile.
The steel projectiles have been machined using a pillar drill and file, leaving plenty of room for accuracy improvements. This shall be fixed by using a CNC lathe in the future.
As the voltage increases, Mosfets shall need isolating from the Arduino board using Optocouplers. Improvements to the power supply and overall circuity shall need doing to prevent thermal runaway and other issues found during tests not yet shown in footage uploaded.
Changes to low power Mosfets shall be made including paralleling to increase maximum current transfer.
Customs PCB's shall be designed for both Mosfet circuitry & the Capacitor Bank to reduce wiring nests, spade connectors and points of failure.
