Have you ever gone to McDonalds dreaming of some cold, satisfying ice cream only to find the machine is BROKEN? Theorists, I sense something is afoot here. Today, I'm getting my metaphorical hands dirty and wading into the melty mess to find out if something shady is going on. I don't think anyone is prepared for what we are going to find...

i live in norway and i've honestly never encountered a "broken" ice cream machine at mcdonalds, the closest i've gotten is once at burger king

I remember when my son and I walked into a McDonald's and they said that only the ice cream machine was working. We looked at each other and wondered if we were in an alternate dimension.

This is thing that "mcdonalds ice cream machines are always broken" is so funny to me. Here in Chile, mcdonalds ice creams are so popular that there are mini stands of Mc that only sell the ice cream. I never were in a Mc where the machine dosen't work, just has one or two time the classic "we are out of ice cream", but does where really late at night, so I guess it doesn't count.
Sorry for the bad english btw

I used to work at McDonalds, and it was my job to clean the ice cream machines once a fortnight. Because apparently cleaning the entire kitchen, while still making food and restocking the restaurant by myself as the night shift wasn't enough work... I had to pull it apart, scrub every piece, and then put it back together. The "self-cleaning" is always the reason the machine stops working, a few times I even had to empty the machine of the hot shake and ice cream mixes.

Most of the time ours is “broken” it’s in heat mode and the customers understand “broken” better than it being in heat mode.

Right to repair is really, really important, especially when big companies like Apple are notoriously bad at fixing their own products, but your local small repair shop downtown which is a jack-of-all-trades can not only do it faster and cheaper more often than not, they may also treat you less like an idiot and more like an actual human being.

I worked at a McDonald’s for 13 years and yes machines were constantly breaking down. Not just ice cream but the espresso machines as well

What's most interesting to me is how this slowly creeped in. 50 years ago we were a culture that took such pride in repairing what we owned, having the freedom to repair what we own, extending the natural life of our own property. It's not like someone flipped a switch and then magically, everything from cameras to medical equipment to agricultural devices and consumer electronics were all unfixable. It was a slow creep over time to the point that most people didn't even notice until past decade.

Thank you for going over this that more people have an idea what is happening, so that hopefully we can reverse it together!

I’ve worked at a McDonalds for about 7 months now and I can confirm that it’s usually just because new mix got put in the machine and it’s still just ice cream soup. I’ve seen people try to serve the super liquidy stuff in shakes and people get pretty mad about it. It’s just easier to explain that it’s broken rather than not ready yet.

As a person who has worked for McDonald’s the reason the ice cream are always down is because some stores don’t clean or maintain their machines daily and can cause malfunctions. Trust me we get upset about this to because we have to do a refund and that takes time out of making stuff or helping out other people with orders and stuff like that. But as always another great video.

My friends who I know have told me that when they worked for McDonalds, the reason they told people their ice cream machine was broken, almost all the time, was because they just didn’t want to fill or clean it. That’s just in my area though.

True story:
I used to work at a McDonald's and almost *everything* broke except the ice cream machine, the only time it "broke" was when one poor soul put milk in the machine instead of the ice cream mix
It took a few hours to clean it out but after that it was fine

Haven’t watched the video yet, but I will say that, for the 8 months I worked there, it was legitimately broken. Constantly.

When I used to work at McDonald's, there were 3 different models of ice cream machines with 2 being different versions of Taylor and then there was another brand as well. All 3 broke down regularly and needed to get repaired. I'm drawing a blank at which brand the other one was, though.

I always thought McDonald’s always has their ice cream machine broken, because it was never working in the first place.

When I was working at mcdonalds, I once had the question of "Why am I even working here for slightly over minimum wage, when they could easily create a machine that pumps out burgers flawlessly without ever dropping one", then the next second when one of the cashiers told a guest that the ice cream machine is broken, I came to the sudden realization that "Oh yeah, it'd just be broken all the timr"

Johnny Harris made a video about this:
"The REAL Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken"
It's really interesting, I recommend watching it wholeheartedly.
