Three first things everyone should do were check your fuel cap for proper tightness and signs of worn.
Then check your air filter for excessive dirt or clogged.
Also check out your engine oil, coolant level, and fluid condition.

Look and listen are also important.
Listen your engine for irregularities for rough idle, unusual noise, or miss fire. Look for the color of smokes and strange odors from your vehicle's tailpipe. These are usually the tell tale signs of what's going on with the engine.
Do all the above before erase any engine lights or codes or before you take it to your mechanic.
