Check Engine Light

If the “Check Engine” light comes on on your dashboard, it can be pretty scary! I know first hand, because it happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

If it happens to you, here is what you should do.

If it’s a steady yellow or orange light, it’s usually not an urgent issue, but you should still stop by your local auto parts store as soon as possible. They will hook up a code reader, to see what the problem is, so you can then address it.

I know AutoZone and O’reilly’s does this for free as a courtesy, I would guess most other auto parts stores do the same.

However, if this light is blinking, or has changed colors from orange to red, you have a more serious problem and should pull over immediately. If you continue to drive with a blinking check engine light, you could do serious damage to your vehicle.

You may need to have your vehicle towed to a repair shop to fix the problem

Great advice and yes it is scary. My man is in charge if the largest privately owned Napa auto parts. He also is a pretty good mechanic...so I'm blessed. If something goes wrong with my car, he can fix it ot knows lots of accounts who can. Also a price break on parts! . He truly is the best ❤

As for towing, check if your insurance covers it! It's usually an optional choice for your policy, and it only changes the monthly payment by a few extra dollars. Definitely worth it!

BATTERY... that's weak can also trip warning lights and cause a host of intermittent problems. Get your battery and alternator load tested when they do the trouble code scan.

You can also buy code readers pretty cheap online, most modern cars have an obd2 port (code reader port). I personally have a misfire in cylinder 1 and 3. Whuch is generally an issue with spark (coils or spark plugs) or injectors. Theres ways to check which it is. A bunch of youtube tutorials on that. A quick test tho is to dump some injector cleaner in with a full tank of fuel. If that helps the shaking or anything thats good because you know the problem part. But bad because injectors are expensive and annoying to replace.

My two cents:

The most common reason, these days, that the check engine light comes on is you didn't put the gas cap back on quite right. Check that first before you freak out. It will take a few minutes of driving for the light to go back out IF that's the privlem

Also check the gas cap. It might not be closed right/twisted tight.
