We really need a follow up video to this, to explain the implications for those of us who are studying towards ccent and ccna.

Thanks for Sharing Chuck and David - One thing to note to all those doing their certs. Only because the certification changes, doesn't mean the technologies you're learning are now pointless :) - Keep going, get your certs before Feb. Use this as a motivation and push to complete. You'll find the process of both taking the exams and learning the technologies makes the newer CCNA/CCNP and Devnet much easier! - All the best

I'm glad to see that the new stuff we'll be learning will be cutting edge and not 5 years dated.

Currently studying CCNP and man, this new CCNP is looking to be a beast! The fact that the CCNP will now be considered the written part of the CCIE... that alone speaks for the trials and tribulations ahead for us.

That feels familiar. Back the day I got my CCNA in 2005, there was only one track called CCNA. Don't think there was anything below it. CCNA at that time was easy enough to pass.
Thanks for the update Chuck. Time to get on some programming courses!!

I love these changes. This is exactly what we needed to bring back the relevancy and value to the certification program that was there 10 years ago. Where getting a CCNP or CCIE was highly sought because it was a set and level of skill that was hard to find. In modern networks we need more software/dev/automation skills. We also need more engineers to have a wider skillset.

Thoughts on this huge change.

25 years ago when I got into IT, there were three exams; CCNA, CCNP, and THE CCIE. One of each. That was it.

Today there are dozens of CCxx exams. While it made sense, for a while, to have all of those exams, some of them are trying to fill gaps that aren't needed. With Cisco's push to DevOps, it makes more sense to change the exam structure so they have MORE value for us, the Certification users. For example, while the CCENT is a great exam and a great way to get into the networking world, it has a hard time differentiating itself from the CompTia Network+. I would argue that both are about equal in that both are a great foundation for networking. Another example is the CCNA Cyber Ops. This is roughly equal to the CompTia CySA+. Again, how is Cisco standing out?

All of these certification are excellent, but Cisco wants and NEEDS it's certifications to have considerable value on the market. It makes a LOT of sense to both consolidate the CCNA exams moving forward and focus on their core business and future focus. Doing so gives the certifications greater value to Cisco, the Cert holders (you), and the market as a whole.

Consider also that moving forward there are fewer certifications which means fewer exams to take. Thus, one can focus more instead of testing for several exams to try to fill a niche.

Lastly, we have 8 months, starting now, to study for and pass the CCNA exam. That is plenty of time to pass the CCNA. The question isn't can you do it, the question is are you willing to commit to do it? Get a subscription to Safari Books Online. Use all videos, online classes, and study material they have. It's more than enough to pass the exam. I, for one, am doing exactly that. It's possible to pass the exam before February. It's just a question of commitment. I believe it can be done and I know everyone else can too. Study, pass, win! And best of luck to y'all.
