When Your Doctor is NOT Helpful

Sometimes, doctors just don’t give helpful advice

I have oral allergy syndrome. The solution is to peel what you can, cook what you can and in my case take a prescription allergy medication! I can now eat apples and peaches without unbearable itching.

There was a time that I was dealing with a wide array of health issues, so I desperately started going to any specialist that I thought could explain what was going on. One symptom I experienced was that every time I bent my knee, I had a shock of nerve pain and numbness in my calf. It happened twice within a few months and lasted a couple weeks each time. So I decided to see if a neurologist could help explain everything that was going on. He basically told me I was wasting his time, and when I asked how to at least make the numbness and nerve pain stop, he said I should stop doing whatever I was doing when it started. So…. stop bending my knee?? At my innkeeping job?

I’ve come across docs like those. I was going in for my g/j to be replaced under endoscopy, nothing new to me. Then an older GI doc, that has never treated me comes in and says, “Why do we even have this, you just need to eat”? I looked dumbfounded because it takes two seconds reading my chart and you see that I’m dealing with gastroparesis, short gut that leaves me with a 7 min transit and malabsorption, and EoE that are from an underlying autoimmune disease that we haven’t figured out because we’re always too busy just managing symptoms. Be treated me like I was a bother to him and a liar. He actually kicked me off the service after saying I had relapsed into my anorexia after a freaking decade despite the extensive surgical and other tests done to confirm that horrible trio of pain, nausea, and dumping syndrome (the person who named that was not nice btw. I’m now TPN dependent with intestines that don’t work and a stomach that hits the eject button after two bites of food. I’m glad I have a great team now.

Doctor, I can’t breathe when I walk. How can we adjust my (noninvasive at home) ventilator settings? “Just don’t walk.” I’m sorry? Pardon? I don’t think I heard you right. “Just don’t walk. I’ll see you back in 5 months.”

I was too dumbfounded to even say anything back. I wish I was making this up. 😭 time to start the arduous task of finding a good (not egotistical and not arrogant) doctor…

I told my doctor i get sick when i drink beer suddenly. Never had this problem before, and other alcohol is fine. They literally just said, "dont drink beer." Gee, thanks for even trying to diagnose this.

I swear I’ve thought I was crazy my entire life because raw apples and cherries do this to me but I can eat apple pie and luxardo cherries fine. Gave it a goog and sure enough there’s a name for it.

This is quite literally every effing doctors appointment! I slammed my fist into the bed, screaming in both rage and laughter. “Avoid stress, don’t listen to sounds that trigger your seizures! “Dude, those sounds are quite literally all around me, I can’t wear earmuffs and noise canceling headphones, forever, I’m blind!

Is it me or does this happen to women more? When my husband has similar complaints, our shared family doctor takes him way more seriously 😢

I had a dermatologist who was lasering a suspicious spot off my arm. I asked him why he wasn't cutting it out rather than using a laser. Instead of explaining the reasoning he said, "How much of your arm do you want me to cut off?" This is the reason why I never go to the dermatologist, despite the fact that I'm at high risk for skin cancer.

OAS can be worse when the pollen is high. You can cook the fruit or try peeling the fruit. Sometimes this can help.

Not exactly equivalent but I have an allergy to my own sweat so I get allergic reactions every time I exercise and I told my doc about this and I was like “something tells me you can’t just say ‘then stop exercising’ huh?” Because she’s told me before to stop eating dairy when I’m lactose intolerant

I had one of these docs fire me! My son had oral allergy syndrome at age 7, but we didn't know that - he just told the doc about the symptoms he got when he ate strawberries and peaches. The doc said, "Don't eat them. We done here?" I sarcastically asked, "Is that why you make the big bucks?" and was asked to leave. I said some other stuff too. Good times!
