I had a garage full of arcades. Used to work on them not knowing this. When I found out, I realized the risk I put myself under. Gives me shivers to this day.

cool! Yes, I learned this fact of life while working on a CRT tv w/o discharging first. Threw me across the room and scared the crap out of me.

I learned about crt monitors long ago… I was 16 and had a screwdriver in my hand… shocking breathtaking experience

This is the only video I've seen showing use of a high voltage probe with a meter, which is awesome. Exactly what I want. I want to *see* the voltage being discharged instead of listen for a snap (that often doesn't materialize, using some makeshift discharge tool).

Holy shit, thank you so much for this. Literally every other video about "safely" discharging a CRT show people using a screwdriver and an alligator clip, you're the first person I've seen demonstrate how to do it properly with an HV Probe. I picked up a cheap used probe but didn't want to launch myself into space if I did it wrong

I don't ever do this unless I'm using my RetroRalph branded oven mitt.

Out of curiosity did you have to rewire your house to run these machines? Do you have them on all at once or one or two at a time?

I've seen one of these burst like a hot cap. Sent shrapnel into the walls of our tech shop and injured the idiot who didn't discharge it.

I saw my dad a few time jump off the floor with knees bent... he'd always laugh and ask if i saw the spark jump onto his hand.
We use to put a wire wrapped around a screwdriver and the other end to a metal frame like a window or door. Goodluck to anyone that would touch the window or door frame at that time 😂

That discharge probe you are using looks so safe and i like the fact that it display the actual voltage. What's the name/brand of that tool? I would like to buy something like that but in EU i can't find anything similar

EDIT: I think i found it! It's a B&K Precision model HV 44A? Looks very similar

Awesome! I've been waiting for this video. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Is this the same procedure that I would use if I wanted to discharge the CRT in a television set? I've got one that needs the rf coaxial replaced on it.

Good to know, I had no clue you had to do this.

Uhh the handle of that thing isn't conductive so how is it possible to electrocute yourself?

Really? Pff. My older brother removed that thing from old TV screen with his bare hands without discharging anything. He just turned off TV and then just rips off that thing fast and that's it. And nothing happens to him or his hand OR TV screen. Sure, he discharge it later by puting it over some metal surface, but still. Also yes, my brother is a mechanic, who is fixing old TVs, computers, cars, tractors and anything that he can fix, since i was a little kid walking under the table lol I'm now 28 years old and he is 40, but he still remembers how to fix stuff, and he knows things that i had no idea about fixing some stuff. Also yeah, old soviet TVs has the same screen too, but with lamps. More modern versions doesn't use lamps but the screen remains the same. I had one of those TVs working very well. My mom watching it every time. And all thanks to my brother, who did a heavy fixing of that TV.
