It's air drag optimized. The gap cuts wind noise from a smoothed brick sticking out the side. It also avoids negative pressure behind the mirror which cuts air drag losses, slowing the car through the air at speed. Ferrari has a 2 strut mirror with the gap in between to achieve the same benefits.
