A World War Two Luftwaffe pilot has become one of the first Germans to fly a Spitfire. Hugo Broch, who's credited with 81 victories in more than 300 missions, went up in the aircraft at Biggin Hill Airport, in Kent. The 95-year-old is also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Germany's highest military honour in World War Two.

Interviewed in this report are aviation historian Paul Beaver, Rob Shafer, a member of the Association of Knight's Cross Order, World War 2 veteran Stuart Bell and Hugo Broch himself.

You cannot help but admire these old guys. They put their lives on the line for their countries and were lucky enough to survive. Heroes all of them, irrespective of on which side they fought.

95 years old and look how young he will live past 100.

It's kind of funny. To succeed as a fighter pilot, you need to be aggressive. But once you get a group of them(especially from opposing sides), it devolves pretty much immediately into a bunch of excited children comparing toys and happily sharing stories about shooting at each other.

Toured Germany many years ago never came across a disgruntled German once all very friendly and polite.

Just amazing to see these old warriors. They have so much to teach us about unselfishness but are far too retiring to do so. Wonderful generation

Wow! Truly unusual and historic event today. Nice that somebody cared enough to allow this Luftwaffe "Experte" or Ace, to fly in a WW2 fighter, albeit a trainer (non-combat) dual control version. Thank you for sharing this. This is the true value of YouTube!

Grand old guy just like my dad who served in bomber command, he would have respect for him, captured after bailing out over Belgium, said Luftwaffe treated him ok, even asked out for dinner by two pilots in Frankfurt en transit to pow camp, he's in care home now aged 95 but doesn't look as young as this guy, amazing !!!

Congratulations on your 100th birthday, Mr. Broch! 06.01.22 . All the best and health! Or as we aviators say „Hals und Beinbruch " ! As far as I know, you are the last living fighter pilot with a knight's cross.
