Met him at a California air show a number of years ago. He was doing a book signing and I mentioned I had a private pilots certificate. I read his signing of the book after and he wrote “to a fellow pilot…” I about fell apart. What a humble and gracious man. RIP to one of the greatest generation.

I actually met Bud in a Texas museum and he gave me and my son a guided tour. Nobody else was there. He spend some time with us and opened up about an incident. Later another vet there told us that he had never heard what Bud told us. I will always remember that moment with my son, thanks Bud.

Chuck Yeager said Bud Anderson was the best pilot he ever knew.

Some people try to throw shade at Allied aces, because Axis pilots had higher scores; but Allied pilots were in it for a specific length of time/number of missions; Axis pilots mostly flew till they died.

In 1987, Clarence ‘Bud’ Anderson visited the USAF Air Command and Staff College and I had the pleasure of hosting him. What an amazing fighter pilot, role model and hero.

At the beginning of WW2 the Luftwaffe had well trained pilots with lots of hours before the first combat, but later they had less than 1/4 of the training hours than before.
Lack of fuel, lack of training planes and lack of time.

The Luftwaffe never had a strategic function - it was a tactical air arm designed to support the ground forces. In the mid-30's, General Walther Wever died in a plane crash - he was the champion of four engined bombers - and Hitler subsequently canceled that program. Also, Goring and staff wanted more bombers and their way was to make two engined planes.

German aces kept flying combat missions and shot down hundreds of aircraft.

Western Allied aces were sent to train the next generation of pilots, who won the air war.

R.I.P. Bud. This Memorial Day of 2024 will be more special, and sadder, too. Thank you for everything you did and the sacrifices you made. 🇺🇸
