I love Portulacaria Afra, they're such fast growers, they look great too, with their tiny leaves. Thanks for these tips.

So to transfer to a bonsai would you use the hole the roots are growing through as a location to cut the roots?

I've just started my bonsai journey. I'm trying 2 Chinese Privet plants. This year is for growth. Maybe next season I will begin pruning and wiring.

It’s so exciting growing trees especially in the ground they develop so fast … it’s quite amazing how powerful and strong roots are, they can even grow through concrete !

After getting the desired trunk size and transferring to it to a bonsai pot, how do you cut the roots that were binded to the ground? Should i cut normally?

Do you cut the excess roots that have grown out of the pot and then repot the tree in a shallow bonsai style pot?

What I love about Port Afra is remove nearly all the root ball with minimal repercussions

Do you need to add bigger holes on the pot for the roots?

What is the plant at 0:06? It looks like a jade plant.

I have a variegated Jade that I’ve had sitting in a bonsai pot, lava rock and all for about a year now. It’s in need of thicker branches and roots since it was my beginner tree, it’s not small but also not big. I was expecting it to grow mightily but I realize now that growth is slow in the conditions presented to it from its rocky soil.

Would this method work for it? Does putting it in a small pot and allowing the roots to find the ground through those holes specifically build bigger roots? I’m about open to any method, can planting in a large pot with a good soil mix do the trick aswell?
