I had a funeral for my goldfish this morning, I won him at a fairground when I was 10 and he was with me for 16 years. Loved my little buddy, started out in a 5 gal tank with neon rainbow gravel/ SpongeBob pineapple and ended with a 120 gallon planted tank cause he deserved the best. He was with me through moving out, buying my own house, getting married and having my first two kids which I think is pretty cool. He was a good boy and I’ll miss seeing his little face every day. Now I have this huge empty tank (except shrimp and snails), what should my next fish be? I’ve been researching angel fish a lot but I’m still not sure if that’s the right choice for me.

Currently relaxing after going to my local fish store, talking to one of the staff about cichlids, bettas and shrimp, admired some bettas and goldfish and pondering about the cuteness of pufferfish ( so basically I enjoyed myself)

I went to petsmart two weeks ago and the cashier said she owned betta fish and told me that getting a bigger tank in the future is great for them. I have 2 10 gallons and i was like “Wow.. you’re the best i appreciate you” because usually they try and get people to buy the small and cheap tanks. She was so nice and even gave me advice as to what kind of pellets and treats to get (and i finally got them yesterday).

I agree with the comment from the beginning, I have an african clawed frog. He's my best friend and I would do anything for him, and even if he doesn't move much, just looking at his derpy face makes my day. I can't imagine buying a fish tank with live creatures only as decoration.

You have most likely heard about this a lot, but right now Florida is dealing with a massive pleco infestation. In which, years ago we went a spring, where we didn't ever see a Plecostomus, now it's one of the only fish we see in the spring.

I’m a petco aquatic specialist who watches fft… and I agree. We’re there as intermediate keepers to kelp absolute beginners. We’re very rarely true experts :(

Thanks so much for making a concerted point about never releasing pets into the wild. I’m Canadian too (near Waterloo, Ontario) and I have been involved in trapping and rescue of pet animals released into the city largely by university students (who should bloody well know better!) when their courses end and they go home. The illnesses those animals end up with, the injuries they suffer, the hunger and cold… it is inhumane in the extreme, and it can destroy our own ecosystems.

A park ranger once told me about a conversation with a visitor to a lake. "Where would be a good place to release my pet turtle?" "Uhh... nowhere" then he told them how to properly get rid of it. Our lake still got invaded by the red eared sliders and goldfish:(

I was reading Google reviews on local fish stores and a lady literally gave one of them a 1 star review because her fish died in 3 days 🤨 edit* they tested her water and said it was her fault which pissed her off more lmao

I was walking through a PetSmart and heard an employee trying to convince this poor man who knew nothing about fishkeeping to buy a Betta for his daughter, and she said they can survive in a one gallon with no filter or heater their whole lives because "every inch of fish equals one gallon, but Betta fish can stay in one gallon and be happy."

Here along the Oregon coast we have the same problem with invasive plants and animals. Behind my house is a forest of English ivy and Himalayan blackberries. We also have invasive crabs here that outcompete the native juvenile crabs. I wish more people cared.
