If Napier is fired now, the portal opens for 30 days and players will hit the portal in droves. Not for a chance to play this year, but to get on a team they like for next year. If you wait until the end of the season when the portal opens for everybody, then you are competing with more players. It also gives the players time to adjust to the new program before Spring. So I think that's why he wasn't fired because the game has changed; it's all about protecting your program from a mass exodus. So they will wait until after the season when they have someone already coming. They will gather the players and say the university has fired Napier and Lane Kiffen (or whoever) is the new coach. It's to allow the players not to jump the gun, especially the offense.
