Paco de Lucía is considered (by the best musicians in the world) as the best guitar player in history, as well as one of the best musicians and composers of this era....in addition to having been the greatest influencer of the flamenco style, the most important musical genre in Europe today, partly thanks to him

Nice pick Justin. I was blessed to see him with McLaughlin & DiMeola in 1983. Steve Morse opened. I was always strapped for money, but the money is gone and the memory remains. So glad I got to see him. RIP Paco.

Count your were here when Paco was here.

This was NOT Entre dos aguas, despite the title shown on the screen. Even the BBC messes it up sometimes. Hope you and your loved ones are safe.

The refence to "the continent" here means Europe mainland. Britains often say so to distinguish themselves as the British Isles from the rest of Europe.
Stunning performance!

On any instrument you'll find some people who just take it to another level (with hard work being a large part of the secret, but I don't see any reason for us mediocre people to take away from those with talent - which is also part of it - and then a kind of "heart" too - to express flamenco, you have to have flamenco feel, just like someone playing the blues has that blues feel). Guitar isn't a special kind of difficult (although maybe because it's been the basis of so much music, the standards have become really high for someone to be regarded as a great guitarist, so I'll immediately contradict myself on that point, I think).

I read about this a long time ago so my memory is a bit vague, but I think I recall that Paco's dad (a professional flamenco guitarist) taught him, and was an exacting taskmaster - to the point of being abusive, at times, about this. (I think there might be something from those early years involved in him giving himself his mother's first name as a surname, instead of using his father's surname). He suffered to build up all that technique, but once done it was always there to just summon up according to how he was feeling a song on any particular night. It's impressive, but in a sense it's not music, just a kind of athletics. The music is whatever is going on in that mind, imagining and feeling the song behind those shut eyes. The well trained fingers are just following instructions, and have been conditioned to operate on "auto pilot" doing that.

The picking technique you describe is particular to flamenco (although other guitarists use something like it sometimes to get something like that sound). You can partly replicate it by making a "thumbless fist", and then flicking the fingers one after the other in overlapping succession, so that the fingernail is what hits the strings. (It can hurt a bit if you hit a string with a more tender part than the nail). It ain't Paco, but it can kinda work.

Thanks for sharing this performance, Justin. Paco de Lucia came to prominence working with an innovative young flamenco singer, Camaron de la Isla. Their performances together are the stuff of legend. Wish I could have heard them in concert together, and at least we have the recordings (including the video linked below).

My introduction to him was Bryan Adams' Have you Really Ever Loved a Woman. Then I got fully immersed after he was on the Life Aquatic soundtrack.

I hope someday you move the needle slightly to the west on the map and check Carlos Paredes 😊

The master comes alive. I heard that he has to get baked before he can play. Whatever works!

This is not 'Entre dos aguas' but I'm sure you'd love it.

Gorgeous passage and performance (unfortunately interrupted by a political advert - I know, but I've already locked in my choices). Even aspiring to that level of technique has always been unimaginable.

Noten como su mano derecha solo utiliza 4 dedos... el meñique no interviene... fantastico 👏

The piece has no name. It is an improvised mix of different "falsetas" of bulerías by Paco de Lucía. The flamenco guitar allows you to improvise and combine patterns, as long as the structure and rhythm ("beat") of 12/4 remain.

Just remember, his name is pronounced, paco de luthia
