If the range officer hadn’t given him a piece of his mind, he would’ve had pieces of his own mind scattered across the range

Gun safety needs Religious levels of devotion. There can be no excuses when it comes to something that affords a 0 margin of error.

When they said "Points it at himself" I just gasped and braced for the worst. My god that man must've been determined that it wasn't firing

Someone I used to work with (known for being kinda stupid and poor a decision maker) was cleaning or looking at his gun…I don’t remember specifics. His mom walked in and fussed about him messing with it inside and it made her uncomfortable. He proceeded to put the gun to his head and say “It’s not even loaded mom” but didn’t finish the sentence before one in the chamber went through his temple. Although we were all saddened, we really weren’t surprised.

I remember when my dad took my sister and I to get our first guns. We went to a local sporting store, and I will never forget the man next to us asking to see a shot gun, promptly being handed it, and then aiming it at every single person who was in his vicinity(us included). Needless to say he was pinned against the counter and the gun was swiftly taken. He kept yelling at the clerk that he wanted it, but the clerk just told him something along the lines of, "I already called the police, and you're banned".

Yes, it was unloaded, but you don't fuck around like that. You always treat a gun like it's loaded. It was clear that man had no idea what gun safety was, no concern for human life, and he thought it was a game/joke.

Edit: Thank you for all the likes.

For clarification, both my parents were military, and so gun safety was very important early on. We have a few guns for home protection, so it was crucial that we (14 / 15 at the time) knew what they were, how to operate them, and how to respect them.

Every ask Reddit response starts with “I wasn’t (question), but…

My little brother had a friend over at our house (he and his friend were both 9 years old) they got into the shop where I work on my various projects. I came home to them running around the backyard with a couple of very real handguns, pointing them at each other and clicking the triggers while yelling BANG BANG. They were not loaded (luckily) and made sure to lock the shop doors from then on.

“This knife is super dull!”

Proceeds to plunge said knife deep into own chest.

I honestly think he was hoping to suicide that day...but couldn't, so, selfishly, nearly made this poor man have that guilt to live with....

I own a “gun shop” I’m a gunsmith and do cleanings, repairs, painting, and I build guns. No retail but I will sell used guns. I also worked part time at Cabelas in college. I had to refuse a lot of sales but one stuck with me. A woman had just lost her husband and she wanted the cheapest gun possible. I assumed it was because she was on a budget and wanted it for protection. She passed the background check and everything and when I went to ring up the sale she asked if she could purchase only one round. I looked her in the eyes and you could tell she was very sad about something. I’m assuming she was missing her husband a lot. I then asked her why she only wanted to buy one round? She then told me it’s because all she was going to need. I immediately stopped the sale and took the gun back because I feel like she was going to harm herself. I then went to my manager and asked for an early lunch break and told him why. I talked to the lady for about 15 minutes. Turns out she was very lonely and her kids never came to see her anymore and she didn’t want to live anymore. I gave her my phone number and told her if she ever wanted to talk to someone to just call me. I never heard from her again.

I have never picked up a gun in my life and I still know the golden rule of gun safety. That man shouldn’t be a gun owner.

I worked at a gun store, though not selling guns so my stories are second hand.
Reasons guns weren’t sold:
* buyer was drunk, later threaded to shoot anyone who left the building
* buyer was looking for “a gun designed to kill people”
* buyer refused to show ID and when pressed shouted “I’M NOT GONNA SHOOT UP A SCHOOL”
* Not a buyer, but a seller, pointed a gun at our manager, finger on the trigger, hollow point in the chamber. “How much can I get for this?”

So not at a gun shop but I was at a women's shooting class. This woman's ear protection wasn't on properly or something. She went to adjust them, with the gun still in her hand, with the safety off. The instructor lost his shit on her. This was the same woman who later asked durning a conversation about how some of the instructors refuse to go to places that do not allow for you to carry in them, what if you go to the hospital and still want to carry. They very bluntly told her, it's illegal to carry in a hospital (at least in the state I live, not sure if it's federal law or not) and they lock it in their car or leave it at home.

Story from my Navy dad: they were at the range practicing as ya do, and someone had called over to another guy or something had caught this dude attention. So he turned, fully loaded gun in hand, no safety on (he was just shooting). Aimed down the line of everyone else at the range, my dad included. Needless to say, dude was pinned down faster then the bullets being fired.
It's not just civilians who are idiots when it comes to gun safety.
