The fact that all the neighbours ended up loving him like he's part of their family breaks my heart

It’s hard to be in a movie with Tom Hanks and still be the absolute star of the show. Marisol was cast perfectly, could not have found a better combination of funny and kind and chaotic if the director tried.

The fact they knew something was wrong by him not shoveling his sidewalk let’s you know they love him ❤️❤️❤️

When I saw this as a Tom Hanks movie, I thought...cool. a feel good movie. 2 hours later I was in ugly tears and loved every moment of it.

I am a 68 yo, crotchety old fart, and I amazed my 38 yo daughter, when I shed a couple of tears at this scene. It's one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, mainly due to Hanks. Such a great actor!

The way he closed his letter to Marisol with “Abuelo Otto” broke a piece of my heart ❤️‍🩹 Tom Hanks made it worth going though every single emotion throughout this movie 😌

It was so touching to see how he tried many times to kill himself and failed because he said : I have still things to do, he lived because he had people who loved him around and this gave him hope to live 😢

Tom Hanks rarely makes a bad film. However this is probably the best film he's ever done. Just wonderful.

His wife was there the whole time keeping him alive through all his people around him.

Just paused at the frame where the whole letter is visible, and just noticed how Otto crossed out the word "shit" and wrote "DO HIS BUSINESS" in the cat bit.

I grew up next door to an elderly woman whose husband and son died many years ago in a car accident. She never remarried or had anymore children. She was grumpy and sometimes even rude to my family and other neighbors as well. But one day I decided to finally attempt to sell those chocolate bars for the annual fundraiser…of course she refused to buy one 😂 as she began to slam her door shut on my face, but I gave her one for free simply because I was 10 years old and believed that chocolate was simply the best thing ever and thought of it as a delicacy lmao I can’t remember my exact words to her, but it was something like “well I know you want one because everyone loves chocolate!!!”…she hesitated but took the bar anyway. Next morning she knocked on my door asking to buy some chocolate because she actually liked it!

She ended up buy every caramel filled chocolate bar I had left (they had several different fillings- caramel, peanut butter, mint chocolate, etc). They were 11 left and it made me so happy to sell that many at once.

After that she slowly warmed up to me and became one of my most favorite people I’ve ever known in my entire life. She taught me how to crochet and taught me many cooking skills that I still use today. We would also sit on her porch in rocking chairs and gossip about everyone on our street 😂😂😂

She passed away when I was 17 and I was just devastated. Those few years as friends were absolutely the best! She had a huge thimble collection and she left them to me. I had them arranged in a big shadow box that I keep in my kitchen right beside where I display my collection of milk glass.

RIP Margaret ❤
You are truly missed

I'm 31 years old, and the scene of Marisol entering the bedroom to find Otto passed away had me very close to crying. From the humor, the realism, the heartwarming scenes, the emotion, the funny, yet grumpy and very intelligent character of Otto, "A Man Called Otto" is easily one of the very best movies I've seen in a long time.

Her name Marisol (Mar y Sol). In English it translates to Sea and Sun. The name is a abbreviation of “Maria de la Soledad” (Maria of loneliness) in honor of the Solitude and loneliness. Otto expressed his pain of loneliness by trying to end his life multiple times after loosing Sonya; his love of life. His Solitude was glorified by Marisol, Tommy, the cat, Malcolm and all his neighbors who loved Otto. He was never alone. He was drifting lost like in the sea. All the neighbors were the sun over his sea. He Medically and Legitimately had a big. ❤️ He was a good man. I Love this Movie so much. My Top 5 now.

I watched this movie recently and I cried a lot throughout it. Not only because it was such a great movie, but because not long before watching it, I had lost my dad. I’m still in tears watching it again. All the emotions came back. I feel like I can’t watch the movie again for a long time.

This movie reminds me of the story of Dan Peterson and Norah Wood (from CBS Evening News' On the Road series). An old man, whose wife had passed and was depressed, had a chance meeting with a little girl who changes his life. Normally one would assume their friendship would quickly fade but they met at least once a week until he passed in 2020 at 86. Both the initial story and the final tribute are available on youtube.

I would be blessed to have lived such a life, to have loved and been loved so deeply, and to be remembered so fondly.
