It is important to note that Alpha Lock would be better if you work in one layer and do a lot of blending, painterly style. While working with alpha lock is more destructive whilr clipping mask is generally non-destructive, alpha lock allows for more ease of use especially if it's just a minor change.

These two features exist for a reason and there are different use cases for them!

If you are painting on only one layer and is about to make a significant change on your art but unsure if it'll be a good change, you can duplicate your layer and keep the other one as a backup in case tha you mess up ^^

I use these two a lot but for different things!

Alpha Lock is common for me to use whenever I'm trying to blend the base layer and shading + lighting together along with some final touches. Whenever I use clipping, I mostly use it whenever I want to smudge something without ruining the bottom layer or to use a Blending/Screen Mode. Both are equally useful and for different things!!

This drawing is very clean, feels like he's in a field of sunflowers viewing a sunset!

I was also confused when i first saw that video with all the "so basically alpha lock?" comments but I knew there had to be a difference or the app wouldn't have both options. Thank you so much for explaining!

yeah, I mainly use alpha lock to recolor layers. basically only in cases where you might use a hue/sat/brightness filter instead if you wanted

but, I do believe that it locks pixel opacity too. you can use alpha lock for recoloring layers with less than 100% opacity when you want to! if your shading is locked down, but you want to shade or shift the color of it, alpha lock is great.

I’ve been drawing for years now and never learned any of these skills so the music makes me realize I’m an idiot. That’s not an insult towards you OP, I’m just dumb and you are educating me

For coloring the lineart I just clip it to the lineart and color on another layer 🎉

I usually just use clip layers, very easy to remove one if i dont like it or to move them around, and layer overlays, lighting, and shadows to how i like

Omg I didn't know you could do that Tysm!!

Fun fact: you can add another layer on top of your lineart, color your lines, merge the layers, and you have made alpha lock useless.

And that's fine if use up for face part alpha Lock made the art looks life so that's helpful for blend a color not for shading

Chaotic brain: making multiple copy layer of the drawing and alpha locking every one of them for each part you’re painting on 💀

I usually use alpha lock if I decide I don’t like one of the colours I’m using for my flats
