Fun fact: the word "Yankee" is derived from two common Dutch names: "Jan Kees".

If you like this topic Just go north on the Hudson river and see the history of the Dutch settlers and becoming Americans like Martin van Buren whose first language was Dutch. Roosevelt Vanderbilt, van Renselaer, Schuyler etc.
Don't forget to look at New Castle in Delaware, formerly known as Nieuw Amstel.

You: "The Dutch have done a lot for the world".
My Dutch brain going: "DON'T LOOK UP WHAT WE DID IN THE BANDAM ISLES!"

This was a very interesting video! I did not even know all of it. Of course I knew most parts, since it is being taught in our schools in the Netherlands. Oh and the "I am really digging the hair" had me cackling haha as did many many of your other comments. 😂

Wallstreet was named like that because it was near the walls of the settlement. Broadway comes from Breede(wide) weg(way) and there are many more little things like the coin the Dollar(Daalder).

Don’t worry about people forgetting this piece of history. In the Netherlands we know about our past in New York. A very beautifully and easy readable novel about New Amsterdam is by Beverly Swerling, called City of Dreams. I can recommend that book to everybody who has any interest in the history of New York.

3:48 FYI those are not windows (assuming you mean the baby blue casings with the equally baby blue shutters). Those are openings which have been turned into window openings (by installing a casing with glass in them) much later in the life of the building. The openings were actually used to move goods in and out of/from. As you notice every vertical row of baby blue openings has a beam sticking out from the top of the facade which is the beam the block and tackle would be hung from. Goods would be hoisted up or down from/to street level and in most cases those goods would be taken from or to, across the street to/from a barge waiting in the canal in front of the building.
The rather posh looking building is actually a warehouse, a very elaborately decorated one but still a warehouse nonetheless...

Interesting that only a few Americans know this.
Here in Europe it is common knowledge acquired at home or school that New York was founded as Nieuw Amsterdam and was a major city in the Dutch oversea colonies in North America.

I’m from the UK and knew this. How New York was formally named New Amsterdam. Wall Street takes its name from the wall around the Fort.

I can see how easy it is to overlook things in history that are not convenient. I do believe what the Dutch did back then deserves more

The narrator is right the Puritans didn't flee from persecution - as they claimed - as they could be free from persecution in the Netherlands and even in England they weren't persecuted for their beliefs. What they really wanted to escape in Europe from is the law that forbade THEM from persecuting those that didn't share THEIR beliefs and the English may have been pretty harsh in suppressing any attempt to do so.
The solution: start a colony with mostly Puritans and it becomes pretty easy to persecute the minority that don't quite share your ideas.

BTW
The Dutch did support the war of independence, but not so brash as the French did with soldiers and navy. It was more in the realm of covert private enterprise as Dutch traders were happy to supply the rebels with supplies such as powder or arms. Running the blockades of the English Fleet made sure the profits would be high.
It also seems that the American "Declaration Of Independence" for a part was based on the Dutch "Act of Abjuration" (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe) in which the Dutch provinces stated their independence from the Spanish rulers about 200 years before the colonies in the Americas did the same to English rule.
Wikipedia (I know, I know) states following:
"The Act was remarkable for its extensive Preamble, which took the form of an ideological justification, phrased as an indictment (a detailed list of grievances) of King Philip. This form, to which the American "Declaration of Independence" bears striking resemblance, has given rise to speculations that Thomas Jefferson, when he was writing the latter, was at least partly inspired by the [Dutch] "Act of Abjuration"."

If you have ancestors in the Netherlands, and you want to know more about them, just let me know. Maybee I can help you. I've found all my ancestors (and my husbands) back to 1580. I had to read a lot of documents like they showed in the video. Many Dutch archives are available online nowadays.

Peter Minuit was born in Wesel, then a town in the Duchy of Kleve, now in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. His father was probably Jean Minuit, a Protestant religious refugee from the Francophone part of the Spanish Netherlands. Peter Minuit worked in North America, first for the Dutch and later for the Swedish colonists in Delaware.
