PCI express lanes may seem a little confusing at first, but you'll see that they're actually pretty straightforward.

Nicely done, very clear and concise. Passing on to my college students as an additional resource for their desktop support courses and A+ exam preparation.

i just wanna know why my graphics card doesn't boot at the top slot (x16 pci lanes) but boots at the bottom one (x4 pcie lanes)

How does chipset comes into play, does it add more lanes or what?

Depends on how fast you want to run them. I don't think there is a motherboard with 16 pci slots, so even with just 16 lanes you'll be fine in terms of running all of the devices you can plug in. The speed will just be bad. AFAIK however, the built-in devices on the motherboard already use some pci lanes by themselves...

Thanks for the video, very well explained. But if CPU can only support up to max. 16 lanes.
When a 16x card is used in a PCIe 4 lanes slot and a 4x card is used in a PCIe 4 lanes slot at the same time, does it mean the 16x card will be downgraded to 12X?

A good video, but it really did not elaborate on a PCI lane in terms of a pair of transmit /receive differential signals.

Thanks, but I'm confused now : ) There are motherboards supporting several PCIe 16x, but full bandwidth supports with only i9 or Xeon processors. But i7 processor supports only 16 lanes. NVMe needs 4 lanes, videocard needs 16 lanes, so if I want to use them both how i7 processor would allocate lanes between them? What component will lose its speed? (sorry for my English)
