In this weeks episode I share my experience with the Night Trains in Europe. I am travelling from Rome (Italy) to Vienna (Austria) in a 6 bed sleeper train (2nd Class). This is a solo backpacking trip through Europe using the Eurrail/Interrail pass. I document if the trains are safe to ride alone.

You are so brave doing all these new exciting adventures solo. I applaud you for your independence and being up for trying new things, even if they may be difficult.

Thanks for another great train trip report on Youtube! On night trains it's usually possible to book a couchette (the class of accommodation you traveled in here) in a women-only compartment. Sleepers (the higher class with proper beds and at least a sink in every compartment) are usually separated by sex unless you book a private compartment.

6:57 the scenery and the background music are just giving me nostalgic Studio Ghibli vibes :)

Hi Laura, I have been 13 times on the road using interrail card. Very practical way to travel.

Great coverage of your journey! It’s very tricky to get a decent sleep whilst on train. Good luck with your trip ✌️

Don't let that difficulty sleeping keep you from taking night trains. I roved Europe for three months, leaning heavily on night trains to save money and time. I interrupted that with occasional visits to friends outside Paris, sleeping in their home. The first couple of nights back on the rails after that quiet, I often had trouble sleeping. Trains are noisy and bounce around. But after that, I adjusted and slept well.
That said, creeps are a problem for women, particularly on night trains. Boarding a night train in the south of Spain, I met a couple of young American women who had canes attached to their packs. Since both seemed healthy, I wondered why. They soon told me. The night before their train had been crowded with males so grabby, the conductor sat with them to keep the jerks off. Those canes were for protection of sorts.
Fortunately, our night train was almost empty, so I left them in a compartment to themselves. They needed to catch up on missed sleep without guys around. But I told them that if any man entered their compartment, to bang on the wall of between us and I would come over.
I had similar experiences as I traveled, so much so I found it amusing. Women travelers, usually in pairs rather than solo, would watch me for a few minutes, decide I was safe, and then pair off for travel together. They were quite grateful that their troubles ended with me around. The reason was simple. Most creeps are cowards. My mere presence kept them away. And the creeps were right to stay away. If they'd tried anything, I would have enjoyed inflicting sudden pain on them. When it comes to women, men tend to be heroes, wusses, and creeps. I intended to be a hero.
Later in my travels I spent several weeks in a $1/night private hostel in the Old City of Jerusalem that was filled with hard-core, low-budget travelers. Quite a few of the women had paired off for their travels in just-friends relationships with men. My sense was that those men liked having someone to be responsible for and the women liked having a man doing that. It spared the women the kind of fretting you discuss in this video.
If male/female differences interest you, read my book, _Embarrass Less._ It is written for hospital staff based on my experiences caring for teen boys and girls at a major children's hospital. Their post-puberty differences under the stresses of hospitalization were so great, I compare them to going from sunny Rome (a multi-bed girls room) to dour Berlin (the boys room). I got along great with the girls because they could see I was looking out for them. The boys were perpetually grumpy because they wanted to be treated as men and hospitals expect patients to be "compliant, " particularly children's hospitals.

This train is so familiar, I've done a similar one. I got discounted train tickets and I'm looking forward to my trip

For what its worth I seem to remember there is a supermarket connected to Roma Termini. But it cant be reached from within the (huge) terminal. You have to walk along (the northern?!) side of it. I found it one day approaching Termini from the "wrong" side. Which was good since I was going to the coast for a swim in thje ocean and also needed snacks and water for the day =)

I hostelled and took advantage of a monthly bus pass halfway across Canada many years ago solo. My friends couldn't believe that I was traveling alone because they were afraid to travel by themselves. I was nervous at first, but many years later I now prefer to travel alone. Just curious, do you speak any other languages other than English?
