Do you know how to get rid of the rough edges when applying a light to a solid?

Especially when the light moves or changes intensity you can see the clear edges of the light in this weird ripple effect.
I have a hunch it has something to do with aliasing but couldn't figure out how to smooth it.

I am trying to add a spotlight to my footage for a short film sequence. Its saying I can't use the lighting effect on 2d sequence.. I am am premiere pro veteran but Im new to after effects.
