There is a method to disciplining the top performer/highest earner more harshly than other players.

It sends a clear message that nobody can get away with anything less than 100% effort and desire.

These players could "stand in the fire" because they grew up in a time when you had to stand up for yourself and take responsibility. Now criticism is taken as an offense and being a victim is glorified.
