The 40s and 50s were a great era for experimentation. You could easily add Caged, Gun Crazy, Gentleman's Agreement, Pinky, Black Narcissus, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and The Snake Pit to the list.

Night of the Hunter is an awesome movie. Lillian Gish is also great in this movie.

#1 The confrontation between Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum is a must-see.

11. TWO FOR THE ROAD(1967) w/ Audrey Hepburn & Albert Finney. It's a bittersweet dramady on a 12-year marriage, that jumps back-and-forth in time. If you've never seen it, see it. If you've seen it, see it again. It's more than worth the journey. Frederic Raphael penned the brilliant script, directed by Stanley Donen.

Hello again, Hollywood Secret, again, yours is a great post section. And, I have to take my words back from my previous comment, cause you are 100% right in that these 10 masterpieces you mention in your video are some of the Top 10 Most Underrated Movies In Old Hollywood. Thing is, more often than not, I feel the urge to reply to others' posts with my own unoriginal input, in an attempt to get central stage for a minute or two, that is, what I wrongly understand as my own minute of glory, if you know what I mean. Btw, your post is a great way to make these great movies be known to those cinema lovers who happen not to have been exposed to them, as yet. Congratulations on that. Stay well. Cheers!!!

I’ve seen 4 of these films. They are all Great. I’m going to save this video to check in on the ones I haven’t watched yet. I don’t want to forget their titles. Thx for this video.
P.S. I still watch The Big Sleep often. It’s a Great Movie. The cast is outstanding and when you 1st. watch it, it’s a bit tough to follow. It moves that fast. Thank you Howard Hawks!!
One movie that bears mention is Otto Preminger’s “Angel Face” starring Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons. It too is an excellent must watch!!

Ace in the Hole has always been one of my personal favorites. A real Chuck Tatum special.

Whenever I see one of these '10 great this or that' or '10 worst this or that' I am always prepared to argue the selections. Not this time. Excellent.

Please consider adding the following film to your list: `Pursued` with Robert Mitchum, Teresa Wright, Judith Anderson and Dean Jagger (1947). It`s a film noir western set around the time of the civil war, involving gun fights, flashbacks and the desire for revenge.

Don't forget 1961 One-Eyed Jack, Director by Marlon Brando.

Powell and Pressburger’s films date very well.
I would also recommend from that era: “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and “I Know Where I’m Going”

Nice list. I really enjoy your take on these films and plan to check out 'Sullivan's Travels' and 'Sweet Smell of Success' - based on your descriptions. Whether or not a film is "underrated" is always is always a point of contention, but I would include Kazan's 'A Face in the Crowd" as a candidate.

Knowing how great 8 of these are, I'm definitely going to find Ride the Pink Horse and Letter from an Unknown Woman. Subscribed.

You named some GREAT films. I'll have to take your word for it that these were not appreciated at the time of their releases. The only one I can say from what I've read is true is Night of the Hunter.
