Kelly Slater vs. Rob Machado: The Rematch

The rematch we've all been waiting for: Kelly vs. Rob.

Not at Pipeline this time, but Sultans, a playful right reef in the Maldives right near the Four Seasons Resort. The thruster final came to blows but it was Kelly, again, who reigned supreme.

Kelly then went on defeat Shane Dorian to become the overall winner of the Four Seasons Maldives Momentum Generation invitational.

Seeing two of the greatest of all time, who have been brought out to an inaccessible dream spot to promote a private resort that costs $2k+ a night is the antithesis of what surfing represents to me and most people I think.

Machado is still smoother and more beautiful to watch than 75% of the pro's on tour today. Class, soul, rhythm and pace. I can think of 15 in the top 30 that could take a lesson from the opening clip.

I don't know who won the rematch, but I will say it's really nice to see Rob Machado ride a thruster and take things seriously and rip the shit out of small waves. It's great that he's enjoying himself being cruisy and riding all these funky boards, but I still would rather see him just ride a semi-regular board and go Mach 10 on his backhand. He's still fast and crisp as he when he actually tries, and in these conditions he probably looked shaper than any of the guys. Slater of course destroyed, but this is, and always has been, Rob's forte.

Grew up watching Machado and Slater go head to head on the waves after a serious friend’s ping pong battle. Miss seeing Rob’s style in competition. His style is so unique, quick, spring-loaded. Love seeing him surf.
