Yes! Was always confused when people said to wear UV year round even in the middle of winter. I’m in the UK and we barely go above “1” unless it’s the height of summer (about 8 weeks a year). Felt totally unnecessary and a waste of money and product - but a lot of influencers live in places like Texas which is a whole different climate to mine. Have been reviewing the weather app diligently each morning just in case!

I learned this from you Dr. Shereen and it has been time and money changing for 🇨🇦 weather, thank you 😊

LOVE this!! Thank you Idriss!! Hate the fear mongering around sunscreen. Influencers make it seem like if you skip just ONE day you're doomed

As an Australian this is definitely something I regularly check. Today we have a UV index of 12. Middle of winter is an average of 4 here in Brisbane but that only lasts a month. I envy ALL of you in the comments! 😭

I'm doing that for years. I'm from Germany and where I live there are about 3 to 4 months in winter, where the UV Index is constantly 0, unless it's sunny outside (which doesn't happen a lot) around noon, then it's 1. I'm not using sunscreen during that time, it's just not necessary.

Wow! I had no idea this was a thing! I live in the PNW and during winter we don’t get a lot of sun and it did feel like a waste. Today for example, will not go over 1!! Thank you Dr!!

Omg I wish I'd known this ages ago. I'm in Scotland, uv index 0. Just gotta deal with the cold and wind

I live in New Mexico, so I don’t have to worry about ever checking it because our UV index is never that low.

I now check the UV index every day. I don't like the feeling of sunscreen on my face, so I love not having to wear it when I don't need to 😊

Thank you so much! My sunscreen is really expensive (I have picky, sensitive skin) and I haven’t had the means to restock so the times I do go outside I want to be extra careful! Really appreciate this tip 💜🐰✨

I actually have uv index as one of the 3 choices shown on my Apple Watch for this reason 😊 it's helped a lot

This is so smart! I live in FL now and I am finding it hard to stick to sunscreen everyday 😅! Still looking for a good moisturizer with SPF that won’t break me out

Actually learned more about the weather app on my phone from this but you are the reason I looked up if I need to wear SPF on low UV days, so thank you!

On actives they recommend sunscreen and it would be better to be safe than end up with a burn. Personally I have solar urticaria and PMLE, and my derm recommends I even use sunscreens with iron oxide for blue light due to my level of sensitivity. I will break out in a rainstorm on completely cloudy day. I learned the hard way. I’d rather spend the money than pay with my skin.

The UV index is my favorite thing! I’m always checking that ish to see how much coverage I’m going to be needing aka how white does my face need to look while on my walk. I’m typically still going to use an spf even if the index is at a 3 bc my effing melasma is such a sensitive biatch and will become more pronounced at the slightest hint of sun. I too have learned SO much from you! ❤

Dr idriss! This is incorrect!!!! Uv index on your phone only measures uvb! Uva is always there and penetrates through clouds and most windows! Also snow also reflects uv i thought! Please correct me if im wrong with a source.

I listened to this advice and my melasma flared up and now I’m dealing with it. Not fun. If the sun has risen, suncreen is on.

Thank you SO MUCH for clarifying this! It seems as though the idea behind wearing sunscreen every...single...day, is so that we get into a routine.
Recently, because of the weather in the UK, I've been checking the UV index every morning and it's never been above 2. Plus, when I'm going into work early, it's dark, and when I return home, it's dark....so it's kinda a no brainer!
Question though, does sunscreen protect us from blue light emitting from computers at work??

This advice at the time was precious to know if at the end of the day during the summer if I could go have a swim without applying sunscreen. I was choked when I saw that during summer peak in my city, at 7pm uv index would be 5 😮
