I think Citron originates from the Northeastern Indian/South-Western China.
I have around 12 varities of citrus plants in my garden.
Love the fragrance, no matter which citrus.

Citrons are actually the oldests citrus fruit in Europe. Both lemons and limes are crossbreeds of citron with other citrus fruits.

The word "citrus" originally refers just to the Citrons (via ancient greek "Κίτρος" ), and they were famous in ancient Rome and used widely in European medieval cuisine, more often the peel. Even though the citrus fruits originate in southern Asia.

It also has some significance in Islam, as it was mentioned in sayings by the prophet as to resemble a good believer's heart; smells good and tastes good and tastes good, meaning good all around. It is ground at the center of Arabia, the historically called Najd area.

You inquire the best lemon and throw it away when it has the minutious imperfections. Then how greater will be the inquiry when the Judge of all, Christ king, comes again, with glory.
