Why Jews search for the perfect citron in Italy

Would you pay several hundred dollars for a citron? Many people regard citrons as nothing more than a sour fruit. But in Judaism, they have especially significant symbolic value. A very special kind of citron grows in Calabria, and it attracts rabbis from all over the world to southern Italy ever year. Why is that?

Citrons are actually the oldests citrus fruit in Europe. Both lemons and limes are crossbreeds of citron with other citrus fruits.

The word "citrus" originally refers just to the Citrons (via ancient greek "Κίτρος" ), and they were famous in ancient Rome and used widely in European medieval cuisine, more often the peel. Even though the citrus fruits originate in southern Asia.
