FAILURE . I am right #tile #tilefail #fails #shorts Every tile job needs expansion joints, also known as movement joints, they are critical to the success and longevity of the tile installation. Too many tile installations are done without consideration to how tile will expand and contract with the change of temperature and humidity, and not only the tile surface, but the building itself. If there is no room for movement where tile meets a wall or some other hard object that will not move, then when movement does occur, and it will, something has to give, and it will usually be the tile installation. Tenting or popping of tiles is the end result when the tile floor needs to grow, but has no room for that to happen.
All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. This video contains affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you click on the product link.

“I told them that you can’t install tile in mid air. And they didn’t believe me.”

No room left for expansion. Makes for a pretty cool looking failure though. I've never seen it that bad.

Ha I learned its called tenting.
I use to pitch a tent.
They were too perfect to the edge. Left no room for movement. 😮😮😮

Tiled too tight to the wall. Probably didn't leave room for expansion and contraction. But tenting also has multiple reasons. there could be other reasons for tenting also.

Can't go to the linked video! There's no link on the text & it won't let me copy the address 😢

This is a pretty amusing tile failure.

Tenting, cut to tight to edges of grouted along edges. ??

No expansion joints or perimeter gaps. Impressive buckling here.

Not only all that...the thin set wasn't bonded...

Lack of perimeter extension joints also lack of field extension joints.

Well, for starters, that tile should be on an uncoupling membrane like ditra, not directly to the slab. Then, they probably had their cuts tight to the walls causing it the "tent".

How is that even possible. Wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it.

They probably used the “air” uncoupling membrane 😅

The tile industry requires a broom finish or a wood float finish, if it has a smooth concrete finish you must scarify the concrete, plus field & perimeter movement joints are a must !!!

Moisture. They perhaps have no vapor barrier under the slab.

This is called a floated floor for a reason
