How to Sharpen (Hone) a Straight Razor

This video shows you how to hone (sharpen) a straight razor!

I am assuming your razor is already somewhat sharp, allowing you to start with an 8 000 grit whet stone. If your blade has never been sharpened, you can save some time by getting a lower grit stone in addition to the 8 000. Higher grit stones can also be used - they offer a better edge, but take longer!

What you need:
Straight razor
8000 grit whet stone
Strop paste
Strop

Hi there, what is the best honing tools to use to sharpen your straight razor? I have a dovo razor which came shave ready, I bought a double sided wet stone and bought a shrop with paste for when it stop cutting so I can keep it sharp and never need to buy another blade again.

I put the back and blade point on the stone using a X formation and I swear Im blunting it more than sharpening.

In your opinion would I be using the wrong grade stone or would it be my technique?

The stone that came with my razor sucks balls, it's both not flat enough and it's too short for the length of the blade. Can't find a way to sharpen it
