If you think about it, it makes sense why Astarion is so horrifically upset. Think about his background, everything he went through. Then comes this loyal, loving, stalwart companion that asks for nothing but food and love in return. They gave Astarion EVERYTHING he wanted, without question, just because it could.

Scratch was essentially an emotional support animal. So losing him messed up Astarion big time.

Lol, in a weird way I interpret the Dark Urge one as a weird way of missing the dog sorta like a twisted way of not accepting it, kinda something along the lines of "You aren't allowed to be dead, I love death but you're not allowed to be, so fetch!..."
